Source: Dayton Daily News, OhioAug. 14--CINCINNATI -- The second episode of the Cincinnati Bengals Hard Knocks series aired Tuesday night, and here are the top five highlights.Backup battleIt wasn't the play of backup quarterbacks Josh Johnson and John Skelton that made for great television, it was the coaches' candid comments about their struggles. That inside access is why Hard Knocks has been so successful. Fans would never get that kind of insight through traditional media reports. No coach would ever tell a reporter one his players was horrible. But Marvin Lewis said it about Johnson while watching film."I've never seen so many incompletions. His accuracy is just horrible."After one bad pass, offensive coordinator Jay Gruden told Johnson, "I'm going to start bringing a shot class to practice. You're driving me to alcoholism."Gruden had Johnson for one year in Tampa Bay, so he knows the terminology. John Skelton, on the other hand, is struggling with that, which again is something a coach would never come out and say."He's slow calling the plays, he's slow getting to the line," Gruden said of Skelton. "John's a laid back guy by nature. Sometimes it feels like he's so nonchalant about things that you just want to kick him in the rear. John needs to be smart to win the job."Skelton blamed his struggles with the offense on being new to the roster, but he was signed April 3, just 10 days after Johnson on March 23.Focusing on the negative was a way to set up their strong performances in the preseason game in Atlanta. It's just good storytelling. But the better part was hearing the coaches' unfiltered assessments.Harrison's humanityThe series played up Harrison's gruff nature and displeasure with Hard Knocks in general in the first episode, and it's likely to be visited again next week after his comments Tuesday about the show. But Tuesday night we got to see the side of Harrison that his teammates have insisted is there but is rarely seen. When Marvin Lewis called rookie defensive tackle Terrence Stephens to the front of the room to sing, Harrison reacted with surprise and genuine appreciation as soon as he heard the first few a Capella notes to the song "Superstar."Stephens not only melted away the scowl from Harrison's face, he drew rousing applause for the performance. He also was seen earlier in the episode singing "End of the Road" with Marvin Jones and a few other teammates in the hall of the hotel.Sibling rivalryIt was cool the way the show edited together the clips of Jon Gruden calling plays in Tampa Bay and Jay calling them during camp as they focused on how similar the terminology is to set up their reunion in Atlanta. With the Bengals opening on Monday Night Football, it gave Jon, who is the color analyst for the ESPN broadcast, to catch up with younger brother Jay. And prior to Jay's arrival at a production meeting, Jon told a story from their childhood when he knew his athletic career was never going to be what he wanted it to be."I would always go out and lift weights, throw balls and run, and he would lay on the couch," Jon said. Finally I went in there and said 'You're nothing.' And he said 'Do you want to 迷你倉出租ace? Do you want to race?' I'm playing quarterback at Dayton. I said 'Yeah, I'll race you. Let's go, lazy ass.' There was a 1.2 mile run I did every day, must have done it twice a day. He hadn't run all summer. The backstretch is three-tenths of a mile. We're even. He took off. He beat me by 500 yards. He stood in the driveway, a sophomore (in high school), and he did the Rocky Balboa thing. I cried. I said I know I'm never going to be good enough. He went on to be all-state, went to Louisville, played for (Howard) Schnellenberger, was the all-time leading passer and I'm a dirt-kicker at Dayton. Ham-and-egg backup."Hunt highlightedThe feature stuff on Margus Hunt was funny, from a few of his teammates (including Trotwood-Madison High School graduate Roy Roundtree) thinking he was from England instead of Estonia to defensive line coach Jay Hayes realizing he can't use the phrase "he's playing possum" because Hunt has no idea what he's talking about.Even better than the humor was the quote from defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer while the defensive coaching staff was watching film."He does some good stuff for not really knowing much about football," Zimmer said. "I hate to say this but he kind of looks like J.J. Watt on some of this (stuff)."That obviously drew a reaction from the other coaches, which led Zimmer to follow up with, "I'm not saying he's that good, but he's a big, good athlete."Hue gets realThe show focused more on the backup quarterback battle than it did the competition at fullback, where veteran John Conner, a Lakota West High School graduate, is going against Orson Charles, a second-year converted tight end.Charles was listed as the starter on the initial depth chart, but running backs coach Hue Jackson gave him a thick dose of reality in one scene.Charles walks into the room, and before he even sits down Jackson lets loose with this:"I'm not going to bull (crap) you. You run, you stop your feet, you don't block the right people, you stand up. You can't play football. I mean you've been hearing this from Day 1. This is not a hard transition for you. I'm just being honest with you. You've got to (expletive) do it, or you won't be here. That's just the truth. I'm just being honest with you. I've stuck you out there all the time being first. I can't stick you out there for first anymore. I can't say to John Conner, 'Hey, John, you've got to sit behind that and he's the starter.' I'm not giftwrapping anything. I stuck you first like I told you I would because I'm trying to give you the opportunity to take this thing and run with it. Now you have to go do it. And you're not doing it."Charles says he'll start working on it right after practice and then thanks Jackson as he's leaving.Jackson gives a mumbled "Yeah" without even looking up from his phone. It would have been interesting to see a camera follow Charles out of the room to see his reaction. It had to be hard to hear. But it was great television. It was the essence of Hard Knocks.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Dayton Daily News (Dayton, Ohio) Visit the Dayton Daily News (Dayton, Ohio) at .daytondailynews.com Distributed by MCT Information Services儲存倉

Source: The Spokesman-Review, Spokane, Wash. Aug. 14--After announcing plans last year to build what would be Spokane's biggest downtown hotel near the Convention Center, developers Karen and Walt Worthy say they're ready to start the first phase of the project.Over the past two weeks, the Worthys landed a number of concessions from city officials to help defray some costs of the project, proposed for an open block across the street from the INB Performing Arts Center and near the Spokane Convention Center.Matt Jensen, a spokesman for the Worthys, said ground tests and field analysis will likely begin today as a first step in determining if the rest of the project will continue. That step follows formal approval on Tuesday of agreements between the Worthys and the Spokane Public Facilities District. The PFD, which owns the land where the hotel is planned, signed a purchase and sale agreement to sell the land to Worthy's company, but a final price won't be decided for up to 60 days. The Worthys, who successfully redeveloped the Davenport Hotel and have since built and acquired other downtown hotel properties, have said they plan to build a hotel with at least 700 rooms and 900 parking places. Three-hundred of those spaces will belong to the PFD and will provide yearly payouts from parking revenue. The hotel would have 70,000 square feet of meeting space and a 20,000-square-foot ballroom. The main part of the hotel and meeting spaces would have 600,000 square feet of space and the parking garage 300,000 square feet, Jensen said.No cost estimate has been set for the full construction, Jensen said. The PFD also signed a developer's agreement that gives the Worthys 60 days to decide if the project moves forward. That time gives both sides the ability to conclude a number of final agreements, including a final price of the property. An initial valuation pegs the land's price tag at roughly $6.7 million. A final assessment is due in roughly two weeks, said Kevin Twohig, CEO of the Public Facilities District. If the Worthys don't back out, the purchase gives the developer title to the land. The Worthys' decision to move forward was accelerated by incentives offered by the city of Spokane. Those include an agreement to pay some迷你倉價錢of the cost of ground remediation, a commitment to provide new sidewalk and streetscape improvements, and a waiver of obstruction permits that would have been needed to close a lane of traffic along Bernard Street during construction.Scott Chesney, the city's director of planning and development, said the largest incentive will be bearing some of the cost of ground remediation; the site is likely to have significant contamination, in part from its past use as a place for burying debris from the Great Spokane Fire of 1889, Twohig said. The amount the city will provide is still uncertain, Chesney said. "We'll have to wait until Walt has tests done and finds out what the costs will be. There will be an upper limit" on how much the city will offer for remediation, he added. Two months ago, the PFD approved two incentives for the project: $500,000 for ground cleanup and paying the roughly $2 million to build a skywalk connecting the hotel and the Convention Center. Twohig said one initial estimate he's seen suggests the Worthys would face a ground cleanup cost of roughly $900,000 beyond what the PDF will spend. The cleanup cost, if the hotel is built, would be considerable, since initial plans call for excavating roughly 10 feet below ground to provide for lower-level parking and other services.Money for the incentives will come from $65 million in general obligation bonds approved by voters in 2012 to pay for expansion of the Convention Center.Any funds the city provides for the project, Chesney added, will be repaid out of taxes generated by the project.Twohig and others have said the building of a large headquarters hotel near the Convention Center will increase Spokane's ability to draw conventions and meetings.Mick McDowell, chair of the PFD, said the hotel, if built, and the expansion of the Convention Center will be a "game-changer" for the area.McDowell said the agreements on Tuesday establish that "the PFD is ready to sell and that Walt is saying he wants this to happen."Said McDowell, "Walt looked me in the eye and said, 'Let's go for it.'"Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Spokesman-Review (Spokane, Wash.) Source: The News & Advance, Lynchburg, Va. Aug. 14--The noise downriver begins as a low and gentle rumble, before it amplifies to a pulsing roar and, finally, ends like a thunderstorm on a sheet-metal roof."OK, everybody, helmets on," asserts raft guide Graham Story. The force of the current on the lower half of West Virginia's New River swiftly pulls our boat of eight downstream. But, for a moment in the slack water above one of several imposing rapids, the raft hangs suspended. Then, with the speed of a roller coaster, it quickly enters the sleek, sharply tapered tongue -- a sliver of smooth, green silk unfurled before the churning white water. The seconds seem like hours as we plunge toward the mighty abyss.Imagine a piece of flotsam caught in a whirlpool; the boat rocks freely from side to side. Those of us onboard are plastered by the wall of colossal foam, as we eagerly paddle forward, in unison, at the urging of Story, who barks his orders with urgency to keep us from being washed into the rocky depths below. We endure the intense pounding unscathed, only to find ourselves begging for more. The day began a little after 10 a.m. with an introductory session aboard Adventures On The Gorge's roughly 20-minute bus ride to the launching point in Thurmond. It's about 10 miles from Fayetteville, which sits on the precipice of the New River Gorge, a 500-meter-deep trench carved out by the raging New River through the Appalachian Mountains of southern West Virginia. Our trip leader Brian "Squirrel" Hager, who's been rafting this white water wonderland for more than 30 years, spoke to the fidgety crowd, trying to calm everyone's nerves and elicit a few laughs. He exposed us to the possible dangers, noting that heavy rainfall has made the water level high -- eight feet above normal, to be exact."There are going to be massive waves today," Squirrel said. "And if for some reason I've scared you to death, that is not my intent. This is good family fun [laughs]. It might not sound like it with me up here talking. But on any river trip you do -- anyplace, anytime, anywhere -- there's always potential for injury, serious injury or, even, death. There's no way to sugarcoat that."After arriving at the put-in, enthusiastic hoots and hollers echoed through the valley on the riverbank while our outfitter's crew readied the gear and a half-dozen boats for the day's adventure. The Class VI guides promised us a rafting experience that was much more than a mere roll down the river. They're an intriguing bunch, a cross between burly Southern gents and genuine adrenaline junkies, who motivate their clients with open-mouthed smiles and pep rally cheers. We donned our helmets and life jackets, an oar resting in the hands of each brave and bold rower. The weather was primed for takeoff: skies were crystal-clear, with temperatures hovering in the mid-70s.While the other boats filled up, we drilled Story with an arsenal of questions: "How long have you been working for this company?" "How many times have you tipped over?" "What should we do if the raft does tip over?" "Could you possibly try to keep this thing from tipping over today?"Once all the rafts were in the water, there was a brief rehearsal. We spent a few moments discussing the techniques Squirrel explained to us on the bus: "high-siding," when you jump to the downstream side of the boat to prevent flipping, and pulling a "long swimmer," or a person who has fallen overboard, up to safety. At this point, there was no turning back. The foaming, growling chaos was upon us. We braced for the worst, clenching our plastic paddles like swords before a medieval battle."Let's go forward-five," shouted Story, as he steered the boat from behind and through the gushing insanity. "Now three more. And three more. And go, go, go."The first surge hit the raft with a strong uppercut, then lifted us just above the waterline and danced the boat over a train of consecutive waves at a rapid appropriately named Surprise. Water flooded our peripheral vision. The boat tossed and turned, until we were spit back out into the calm."Whoa, that was awesome," declared Kent Belan, who made the trip to West Virginia from Georgia with his daughters, Kelsie and Lynsie. "Oh, man."In addition to racing white water, the area surrounding Fayetteville offers outdoor enthusiasts one high-octane thrill ride after another, from tree-top canopy tours to cat-walking beneath the New River Gorge Bridge, 850-feet above the rapids, to ATV excursions over mountain trails with stunning vistas. It takes about three hours to get to Fayetteville from Lynchburg, a splendid drive that showcases the lush green horizons and rolling hills of these two states' picturesque countrysides. Just take Virginia 130 west off of U.S. 29 north and, after short stints on U.S. 501 and I-81, you'll hop on I-64 for roughly 100 miles. Then, it's a 20-minute ride, on West Virginia's U.S. 19, right into town.If you're hungry, the Secret Sandwich Society has a selection of uniquely designed grinders, like the POLK (roasted chicken breast, served with the restaurant's signature bacon jam and aioli) or the COOLIDGE (roasted pork loin, topped with homemade pimento cheese spread, oven dried tomatoes and onion). The words incredibly delicious come to mind.Back in the water, our group was gearing up for an afternoon of ripping swells after our Class IV adventurists fed us a superb meal -- included in the price of the tri文件倉 -- along a sandy stretch of the riverbank."I'm so excited," Lynsie Belan said. "I want to get thrown out of the boat."There still were plenty of rapids left to tackle, like the Middle and Lower Keeney, Double Z, Greyhound Bus Stopper and Miller's Folly. The sound of water barreling over the submerged boulders that hide beneath the surface continued to increase. Suddenly a boiling, spray-laden vortex of rocks and fluffy white ferocity loomed ahead. It was the untamed, rugged beauty we'd been waiting for."When I say row," Story softly muttered, "you all row as hard as you can."Other commands and instructions soon followed, making it crystal clear that these had to be taken seriously. The five boats in front of us changed into four, then three, and so on at regular intervals. They didn't just disappear. First, the body of the raft did and, for a split second, you could only see the top torsos of the rowers above the waterline.Seconds later, these, too, were gone and the body of the next raft was out of sight. It was as if the whole string of our boats was heading down a giant escalator, tossing like leaves down a huge, slippery stairway.Hair-raising action, constant motion and a bit of risky business summed up the second half of our trip, but the group, all grinning from ear to ear, immediately started talking about the next time."The rapids, like the third one before the end, where we got smashed, and [Kelsie] knocked into me, that wave just slammed us, boom," said Cody Jetton, a North Carolinian who also braved the waters of the explosive Toro River on a recent trip to Costa Rica. "That didn't happen there. This had some harder waves. It was like, bam. I'd do it again. We might make it an annual affair here."------THE SITESAdventures On The Gorge, 1 Ames Heights Rd., Lansing, W. 新京報訊 (記者蘇曼麗)昨日,儲存倉央行在公開市場上進行了逆回購操作,但中標利率高于二級市場利率,加上周一央行到期續做了三年期央票,雙重打擊下,市場普遍認為資金面將維持在“緊平衡”水平。

Source: Tulsa World, Okla. Aug. 13--The Oklahoma Corporation Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to dismiss AEP-PSO's case seeking pre-approval for costs eventually incurred by the utility's compliance with federal regulations on coal-fired power generation plants. The state regulatory panel's 3-0 vote focused on the Environmental Protection Agency's part trying to force upgrades in Oklahoma power plants operated by AEP-PSO and Oklahoma Gas & Electric. American Electric Power-Public Service Co. of Oklahoma has entered into a tentative agreement with the EPA and Sierra Club that will end up closing two coal-fired units in Oologah by 2026.Corporation Commissioner Patrice Douglas, the panel's chairwoman, expressed frustration with the EPA and President Obama over "heavy-handed tactics" against utilities. The federal government and Sierra Club has sued OG&E over its opposition to air-quality mandates that may cost billions to meet."This case is nothing more than EPA arm twisting," Douglas said in a statement. "The Washington bureaucrats at the EPA are pressing Obama's agenda, and they targeted one迷你倉出租of Oklahoma's utilities to do it."Whether Oklahoma was a focus because not even one county supported the EPA's commander in chief, or for some other reason, we may never know," she added. "PSO was in the horrible position of being forced to negotiate in order to avoid the incredibly over-reaching mandates."AEP-PSO's compliance plan is currently under federal review and may not return to the Corporation Commission agenda on recouping costs until early next year. The plan calls for one of its coal-fired units in Oologah to be shuttered in 2016, while the other is upgraded and then closed 10 years later.Utility spokesman Stan Whiteford has noted previously that his company opted for this plan because it was cost-effective in the long run. Opponents have argued that the resulting rate increases could cost customers billions of dollars."We don't get to pick and choose what is overreach," Whiteford said Tuesday. "We have to comply with regulations."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 Tulsa World (Tulsa, Okla.) Visit Tulsa World (Tulsa, Okla.) at .tulsaworld.com Distributed by MCT Information Services儲存倉
