BRIEF: Portlanders voting today on school budget changes
Source: Portland Press Herald, MaineSept.儲存 04--PORTLAND -- Portland residents are at the polling stations today to vote on a $1.9 million supplemental school budget referendum."Passage of the referendum is critically important," said Superintendent Emmanuel Caulk in a release. If it fails, "we will be forced to cut $1.4 million from our current year's budget, which would require major staff reductions."The Legislature increased Portland's subsidy by $1.9 million before its session ended. That prompted the school department to propose budget changes and go back to the city's voters for ano新蒲崗迷你倉her approval referendum. The school department plans to use $1.3 million to pay for teacher retirement costs that were shifted from the state to the district, $20,336 to pay for two additional students to attend the Baxter Academy for Technology and Science charter school -- there are nine students total -- and $523,483 to restore eight staff positions that had been cut from the budget, according to Caulk.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Portland Press Herald (Portland, Maine) Visit the Portland Press Herald (Portland, Maine) at .pressherald.com Distributed by MCT Information Servicesmini storage

WASHINGTON, Sept.儲存 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The 17th Annual CAF Conference, organized jointly by CAF-Development Bank of Latin America, The Inter-American Dialogue and the Organization of Latin American States, opened with call for Latin America to overcome its internal divisions and lack of unity.(Photo: photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130904/FL74587 )In the first day of the two-day event, which attracted a record crowd of more than 700 business and government leaders from across the hemisphere, keynote speaker Ricardo Lagos, former president of Chile, declared that, while Latin America's self-confidence has grown, the region still needs to come together. 'A lot of people out there': Labor Day weekend has strong showing in Destin
Source: The Destin Log, Fla.存倉Sept. 03--There was no shortage of warm weather, sunshine, or visitors in town over the Labor Day weekend in Destin."The weekend was very good for almost everybody I've talked to so far," Destin Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Shane Moody told The Log Tuesday morning. "Keep in mind that Labor Day is not typically as busy as Memorial Day."As the last big hurrah of the summer season, the Labor Day holiday saw good numbers and positive reviews from those in the hospitality and restaurant industries, despite reports that bed tax revenue was relatively flat in Okaloosa County, according to early results. For May and June, a total of $4.06 million in bed tax was collected in the county, which represents a minimal increase of 0.2 percent compared to the same time last year. While Okaloosa remained flat, the numbers in Walton County were up by 9.4 percent for the same period. Walton County collected $5.6 million in bed tax.And what's good for Walton County helps on this side of the county line as well."Walton County doing well is good for Okaloosa County," Moody said. "The people that go there are going to come here too, and eat in our restaurants and go shopping."John Toombs of Harmony Beach Vacations, which has 73 short term rentals in the local area, told The Log that they weren't 100 percent booked, but they had a great holiday weekend nonetheless."We were about 90-92 percent booked," he said. "It seemed crowded to me."While the roadways may have been full of迷你倉cars, Tommy Green of Destin's Another Broken Egg said the waters along the Intercoastal Waterway were pretty barren."I did notice a lack of traffic yesterday (Monday)," he said. "It was almost a ghost town."As for the restaurant, it was a completely different story."Sunday was a big day for us," Green told The Log. "I did almost 600 people yesterday (Monday).Looking at the month of August, Green said his restaurant's business was up 12 percent over last year."We've been very blessed," Green said.Destin's beaches saw quite a bit of traffic over the three-day weekend, but it was pretty easy going, Beach Safety Chief Joe D'Agostino reports."There were a lot of people out there," he said. "It was probably the most crowded I've seen it for Labor Day in quite a while."D'Agostino said there were no major issues to report from the beach. Beach safety lifeguards will remain on area beaches until the last Sunday in October.Although locals are reporting a strong holiday weekend overall there is still plenty of room for improvement, Moody said. Given the disarray at the Tourist Development Council over the past couple years, Moody told The Log it's time to shift the demographics that are being marketed toward."We ought to be targeting people with income from $70,000-$75,000 and above," he said. "You really want to target people with disposable income."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Destin Log (Destin, Fla.) Recapping the final episode of Hard Knocks
Source: Dayton Daily News, OhioSept.儲存 04--CINCINNATI -- CINCINNATI --The final episode of Hard Knocks followed a predictable path Tuesday night as the show's story arc ended with footage of the final cuts. But the news that came out of those meetings was still surprising for West Chester High School graduate John Conner."I'm shocked," Conner said after head coach Marvin Lewis informed him he hadn't made the team."It's a business, a money game," he added. "That's what happens in this league."Conner asked Lewis what he did wrong, and Lewis told him he didn't do anything wrong and that converted tight end Orson Charles just added a little more versatility and a slight edge on special teams. Some of the comments from the coaches showed why Conner was so shocked."John's a better fullback today," running backs coach Hue Jackson said. "If we're going to be a regular a 20-play, 30-play regular football team, then you've got to go with John Conner. But that's not who we are."Offensive coordinator Jay Gruden then added, "Clearly the best fullback is John Conner. But the difference isn't that significant to where I have to go to war."In a bit of an odd twist, Lewis called Charles into the room to deliver the good news in person, but with the other players he simply made a phone call. After delivering the whole reality show misdirection bit to fool Charles, Lewis showed him what he needs to do better by playing film of Conner. It had to be a painful episode for Conner to watch.Lewis told the four-year vet that he expected one of the other 31 teams to claim him on waivers, but that was filmed on Saturday and as of Tuesday it had not happened. The Hard Knocks crew them filmed the seamstress ripping Conner's name off the back of the jersey. Here are some other highlights and observations from the final episode of the series.Linebacker limboFor every John Conner there is a Jayson DiManche. The undrafted rookie free agent has been impressive in the preseason but still was on the bubble going into the final cuts, especially when his friend Bruce Taylor called and told him after he got cut and told DiManche the team was only keeping five linebackers. With the Hard Knocks cameras in his room and his future hanging in the balance, DiManche waited and waited before finally getting a call from head coach Marvin Lewis telling him he had made the team. After a celebratory roll on the bed with the pillows and sheets, DiManche grabs his iPhone to share the good news. The camera gets a shot of the DiManche's iPhone screen, which shows he has his mom stored in his contacts as "Mommy."Another great moment follows as we see DiManche walking into the locker room to see his locker and nameplate for the first time. Even though his back is to 新蒲崗迷你倉he camera, you can tell there is an expression of awe on his face as he stares at the locker and soaks in the moment.Stephens sings againNo one expected undrafted rooke free agent defensive tackle Terrence Stephens to make the team, but it's still tough watching a dream die.Stephens had one of the highlights earlier in the series when he was put on the spot and ordered by head coach Marvin Lewis to sing in front of the team, resulting in a great rendition of "Superstar" by Luther Vandross.Tuesday night we heard him sing "Gravity" by John Mayer, and Hard Knocks took advantage of the poignant lyrics by mixing in a montage of players on the bubble. The scene cuts to Stephens talking to the camera prior to the preseason finale against Indianapolis, and he says "For a lot of guys this might be their last game ever, and that's a scary thought."Then we get Stephens finishing the song with the lyrics "Keep me where it's light" as we get a time lapse shot of the sun setting behind Paul Brown Stadium.Black is backThe whole Larry Black return seemed a bit forced and even staged.Black was the player who provided the most emotional moment of the series when the defensive tackle suffered a season-ending ankle injury in the first episode and tearfully called his dad to tell him he was on the way to the hospital. His reunion with DeQuin Evans in the locker room seemed genuine, but his visit to the defensive line room was a bit awkward. It came in the middle of a meeting and no one seemed as though they wanted to be bothered with a visit. He got a handshake from Carlos Dunlap and Margus Hunt, but it otherwise was a muted reaction.Quick turnaroundGeno Atkins signed a five year, $55 million extension Monday morning, and Hard Knocks still found a way to work it into the finished product that aired Tuesday night. It was funny watching all of the players reading all of the Tweets about the contract in the locker room. And it was a bit odd to see that big of a business deal being finalized with team owner and president Mike Brown in a gray Bengals T-shirt and Atkins in a black, sleeveless one.Harrison humorThe show could not have picked a better way to end than with James Harrison filming the Hard Knocks people while they filmed him.Harrison repeatedly tried to duck the cameras or flat out mess with them, and he even went as far as to say they didn't deserve to be there. So it make for a great conclusion to see a short montage of him playing with the cameras, with the final shot being him telling them to leave and tilting the camera down to the ground.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Dayton Daily News (Dayton, Ohio) Visit the Dayton Daily News (Dayton, Ohio) at .daytondailynews.com Distributed by MCT Information Servicesmini storage

Local hardware stores still navigating rough waters
Source: The Charleston Gazette, W.存倉Va.Sept. 05--Last month, national home improvement chains Lowe's and Home Depot both reported huge increases in earnings for this year's second quarter (April to June), benefiting from the ongoing resurgence of the country's housing market.Locally, hardware and home improvement stores say their earnings are more of a mixed bag.Andrew Pile, vice president of Pile Hardware on Charleston's West Side, said his family's store has seen an increase in sales from last year."This year we've seen an increase in business but I think on our end primarily it's because of the summer we've had," Pile said. "Our business is very weather-dependent."The store sells everything from roofing material to basic hardware like bolts, nails and other tools -- but its biggest-selling item is lawn equipment."With a summer like this with plenty of rain and plenty of sunshine, it keeps people outside and it keeps people working," Pile said."It's kind of hard to measure though, because we don't have any kind of litmus test for why someone is coming in here to buy something," Pile said. "If they're repairing, upgrading or re-modeling, we don't ask, so we don't really know."Still, he's optimistic about the future. "I've been seeing the reports of real estate increasing in some areas by 15 percent or more, I'm definitely hopeful it helps business," Pile said.Family-owned Zegeer Hardware on Charleston's East End, has seen an upswing in business. Owner Richard Zegeer said year-over-year sales have increased, although he didn't want to discuss specifics. At the Best Hardware store in Marmet, owner Harley Harrah said "people are remodeling on a smaller scale."His sales in power equipment, like chain saws, power drills and table saws, are still strong."I think generally, people are just sharper custome迷你倉s now. That's the biggest thing," he said.In Putnam County, the Buffalo Shopping Center has been in Susan Howard's family for more than 100 years. Right now, business is not so good, she said."I compared the figures from last year to this year and it's substantially less (in overall revenue)," Howard said.Howard, who has a background in sales and marketing, said she's trying everything she can to keep the business afloat. At the first of the year the store added a thrift shop where customers could find quality, inexpensive items. They tried a "blowout" sale with everything in the store marked 50 percent off to stimulate sales."We made more money in that month than every other month combined," Howard said of the sale. She added the store could not keep prices that low to attract customers or they'd lose everything."Honestly, I've raked my brain so much I don't know what to do," she said. "I feel like right now, if I let it (the store) fail, it's failing on my watch."She attributes the decline in business to a slow recovery economy and larger box stores such as Walmart and Home Depot moving into the area. However, she hopes the Toyota expansion in Buffalo will bring in contractors looking for supplies."It might be new business but it doesn't last," she added.Bryan Wilson, manager at Bob's Hurricane Hardware, said business has been stagnant for the last four or five years."We're bring in some new materials and rentals, so hopefully that will help business," Wilson said. Both stores hope that by adding new products, they will eventually attract new customers.Reach Caitlin Cook at caitlin.cook@wvgazette.com or 304-348-5113.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Charleston Gazette (Charleston, W.Va.) AVG's 2014 product range is designed to give our customers choice, control and confidence to be themselves when online."A recent AVG survey of nearly 5,000 people across eight countries revealed that 59 percent of people use at least three Internet-connected devices at home, and that we also use an average of three different operating systems in our daily lives. With so many devices to manage and interfaces to understand, it's perhaps little surprise people are routinely struggling to sync their media and data efficiently, or to keep their gadgets working at optimum level - nearly a quarter (24 percent) of the people we asked encounter device malfunctions on a weekly basis. The top three most common issues are programs or apps crashing (38 percent), slow-running devices (36 percent) and devices freezing (25 percent). The survey also reported that 26 percent of respondents spend over an hour every week duplicating email management across their devices. In addition, over half (51 percent) said they use a different operating system for work devices compared to those they have at home. This variety is far from being a conscious decision; respondents appeared to prefer the simplicity of using just one operating system, with only 15 percent favoring the use of multiple operating systems."Our research shows that today's ultra-connected world isn't always as seamless, efficient or reliable as we might hope as we navigate via multiple devices and platforms," said Yuval Ben-Itzhak, Chief Technology Officer, AVG Technologies.
