College Football Preview 2013: Freshman QB Jameis Winston brings star power to Florida State
Source: The Florida Times-Union, JacksonvilleAug.儲存 23--TALLAHASSEE -- Florida State football coach Jimbo Fisher can say all the right things about the first open quarterback battle in his four years as the Seminoles coach. He can be a stand-up guy by giving redshirt sophomore and good soldier Jacob Coker an honest shot. After all, Coker is the only quarterback on the roster who has actually appeared and thrown passes in a college game. But in a way, the decision on the starting quarterback for the 'Noles opener on Sept. 2 at Pittsburgh was made by a player not even on the roster: Clint Trickett, who left the team after spring practice to transfer to West Virginia.Trickett played in 17 games for FSU over two seasons and threw for 947 yards, seven TDs with a .623 completion percentage. He made starts against Clemson and Wake Forest when starter and eventual first-round NFL draft pick EJ Manuel was hurt, and nearly pulled out a game against Oklahoma. When someone of his experience and grit leaves his home of the past six years (Trickett played high school football at Tallahassee North Florida Christian) and leaves the team where his father, Rick, is an assistant coach, something must have happened in spring practice to shake his resolve. The handwriting on the wall was all caps, in bold. That something was redshirt freshman Jameis (pronounced Jame-ess) Winston, FSU's charismatic, talented quarterback of the future (the near future, as it may turn out) who is about one eyelash away from being the face of the program -- and isn't uncomfortable with the notion, despite the experience around him. Indeed, it's the team he may lead that boosts his confidence."Look at everyone around me," he said. "We have a better offensive line [than last season], better wide receivers, three or four great backs and great coaches, [quarterback coach Randy], coach Sanders and coach Fisher. There's absolutely no pressure on me. There are so many great players they allow me to be the face of the program. You know how it takes a whole nation to raise one kid? I got this whole team to raise me."If he's raised right, Winston could become only the third freshman in FSU history to start on opening day, after Chris Rix and Drew Wetherford.MEDIA LATCHES ONBecause of Fisher's edict on no interviews for true freshmen, few people outside the program and Winston's family knew what kind of personality he had.Now they know, mainly on the basis of one interview that lasted 21 minutes at FSU Media Day. Dropping one gem of a quote after another in everyone's laps, Winston became an instant media hit."Winston's Star Power Taking FSU by Storm," screamed one headline in a South Florida daily."Jameis Winston Steals the Show," was another, on an FSU-centric website. And from another sports website, Deadspin: "Why Jameis Winston will be Your New Favorite College Football Player."Winston offered glimpses based on brief interviews after Seminole baseball games last season. But that one session two weeks ago put him in the chatty category of former 'Noles great Deion Sanders, who never met a microphone or digital recorder he never liked.Smiling and sly, Winston held court on football, baseball, Johnny Manziel, media attention, his team, his coaches, his "country" upbringing and his quest to lighten the day of anyone he encounters."I love putting smiles on people's faces, when people are down, having a bad day," he said. "The worst thing is a rainy day with no laughs. People laugh on a sunny day. smiling and stuff, but on rainy days people want to be dull. There's no reason for that. I try to make everybody smile and laugh. Every day is going to be a good day at Florida State."Just in case anyone wonders about the fact that you can't spell "Jameis" without the "me," he does something to show how team-oriented he is. Teammates, media and onlookers alike were startled at FSU's Media Day when Winston came running up to a sweaty group of linemen posing for pictures to offer towels."He's a funny guy ... he's always trying to make people laugh," said wide receiver Kenny Shaw. "He likes to release the tension with some silly joke. And he's a team guy, whether he's a freshman or senior."Winston admits he may go over the top. But he also knows when it's time to be serious."He prepares, and he understands the power of preparation," Fisher said. "He's very competitive, instinctive and he takes coaching. He's not afraid to say, 'I'm wrong ... I missed it,' and correct it. He does that very well."FIVE-STAR RECRUITThe 6-foot-4, 225-pound Winston was a five-star high school quarterback and a five-tool baseball player at Hueytown (Ala.) High School and could have gone in either direction at the highest levels. In football, he threw for 67 touchdown passes and 6,871 yards and rushed for 2,912 yards and 35 touchdowns in four years as the starting quarterback. FSU, Alabama, LSU, Ohio State and Stanford were the finalists for his services. In baseball, playing infield, outfield and pitching, Winston attracted enough attention to get drafted in the 17th round by the Texas Rangers.Signing with the Seminoles was considered the biggest recruiting coup for Fisher in the four classes he's signed as coach."I can usually tell in the first five or 10 minutes when I recruit the kind of quarterbacks I like," Fisher said. "They've got to have a presence. He has that."Winston redshirted last season as Manuel completed his FSU career with an ACC title and a BCS bowl victory. He's the heir apparent without having played a meaningful down but his spring game performance is the cause for optimism in Tallahassee. Winston completed 12-of-15 passes for 205 yards and two TD passes, making plays with his arm and his feet.Fans also saw glimpses of the athleticism in baseball. Although Winston hit .235 and was 1-2 wi新蒲崗迷你倉h a 3.00 ERA in limited work on the mound, there were bursts of extraordinary plays, especially involving his arm.Two stand out, both throws from right field, nailing Garrett Boulware of Clemson at third, who had taken off from first on a hit-and-run, and throwing out Sean Keselica of Virginia Tech runner at home."I still watch replays of the throw against Clemson," said FSU baseball coach Mike Martin. "The announcers couldn't stop raving about it."AHEAD OF THE CURVEWinston is the oldest of two sons of working-class parents. His father, Antonor. repairs and maintains traffic lights for the city of Bessemer, which like Hueytown, is a western suburb of Birmingham. His mother, Loretta, is a social security worker. It's a family steeped in the most traditional values of home, family, school and church. One thing that was noticed about Jameis is that he had his own timetable. At age 3, he was running rings around neighborhood kids more than twice his age. At age 4, Antonor and Loretta Winston talked the local youth football league into letting him play in the 8-9 age group. On the first play from scrimmage, in his first game, Jameis was playing defensive end. He tackled a ball carrier behind the line of scrimmage, then held onto him while a teammate stripped the football and took it back the other way for a touchdown."He was as good, physically, as the 8-year-olds," Antonor Winston said. "But he seemed to have the instincts about playing the game right from the beginning."And so it went. Jameis remained a few steps ahead of others in his age group and eventually started for Hueytown High as a freshman in football and baseball. There was something else, too: a maturity level beyond his years. Winston became so respected at his church youth group that he was asked to speak to youth at other churches -- when he was 12 (he still does it). Antonor Winston isn't sure when his son started reading, but he knows it was early and he knew that his son retained what he read."He picked up anything he read," his father said.Still another side to Winston, according to those who know him, is one of compassion. He dotes on his little brother. High school coaches receive text messages on Christmas and Father's Day from Winston, wishing them well on those holidays."There are a lot of good kids," said Richard Patterson, Winston's baseball coach at Hueytown. "But not many of them remember to wish you a happy Father's Day."Matt Scott, Winston's coach at Hueytown, said his former quarterback would ask him to not call more pass plays when the game was in hand, so running backs could get carriesHe befriended the family podiatrist, Cynthia Harvey, and asked questions about being a doctor, a profession he plans on pursuing, His grandmother knows exactly why Jameis might make a good doctor."He'll have a very good beside manner," said Myrtle Winston. "He cares about people. There's a consideration you get from him that you don't see in a lot of young people."When photographers were shooting photos and video of FSU players during the recent Media Days, players and on-lookers alike were startled to see Winston come running up to a group of teammates, his arms loaded with towels for them to wipe off the sweat.Winston describes it as making people feel comfortable."I could make you feel comfortable in a black church," Winston said with a smile at the reporter broaching the subject. "I'm always going to make someone feel comfortable. I want everyone to be comfortable, make them feel that way. It settles them down. They're not thinking. Their mind is not racing."MAKING EYE CONTACTScott, the Hueytown High School coach, said Winston's will to win results in a quiet arrogance."He doesn't think anyone has a chance to beat him," Scott said. "He's wired different."When Winston struggles, his answer is to go back to work. Few FSU football players had better attendance and worked harder in summer conditioning and voluntary workouts. One hot afternoon, after one of those sessions of throwing with Seminole wide receivers, Martin was walking past the baseball field when he heard one distinct "CRACK!" after another, the unmistakable sound of someone taking batting practice. In the cage was Winston."Somehow, he got someone to open up the stadium so he could get in the cage," Martin said. "He's always trying to get better."Winston has been at FSU long enough to know two things: the significance of being the starting quarterback for the Seminoles and the legacy of Charlie Ward, the man who established the gold standard for FSU quarterbacks by winning the school's first Heisman Trophy and leading the team to its first national championship."I'm very aware of [what playing quarterback means] at FSU," he said. "But I've got to keep team-oriented. I'm still young. I'm trying to focus on making the team better and winning football games.''Winston was coached by Ward at the USA All-Star football game in 2012, and tried to absorb as much wisdom as he could. While the two personalities are diametrically opposed, Winston said one thing resonated with him during the week he worked with Ward."You can see it in his eye ... he has that 'it' factor," Winston said of his mentor. "I like making eye contact. Some people can't make eye contact when they talk to people. That's how I know [Ward] led the Seminoles to the national championship. You look someone directly in the eye, you make yourself look better. When you get your teammates to look you in the eye, that's respect."The question is, when will the eyes have it? For Winston, it could be as soon as Sept. 2 in Pittsburgh.Garry Smits: (904) 359-4362Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Florida Times-Union (Jacksonville, Fla.) After Bales' victims finish testimony, bid for leniency begins
Source: The Seattle TimesAug.新蒲崗迷你倉 22--JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD -- He was a football star and class president, the baby brother of five boys raised in a blue-collar home in middle America, a good neighbor ready to lend a helping hand.Robert Bales befriended a mentally disabled boy as a youth, stepped forward to serve his country after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and sought candy and soccer balls as gifts for Iraqi children during his first deployment, witnesses testified Wednesday."Bobby was very happy," Bill Bales, the oldest sibling of the man who has admitted to committing the worst war crime by a U.S. soldier during the long war in Afghanistan, said of his brother's childhood. "He had a way with people, too."Bales' defense team for the first time began to make its case for leniency during his sentencing hearing Wednesday, depicting the Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) staff sergeant in sharp contrast to the earlier portrayals of Bales as a coldblooded assassin who stalked women, children and the elderly. In brutal detail, Afghan villagers and prosecutors this week described how Bales indiscriminately murdered 16 innocent people, many of them pleading for their lives, during a predawn rampage last year on two villages outside of a remote military outpost in Kandahar province.Bales, 39, a married father of two who lived with his wife and two children in Lake Tapps, Pierce County, pleaded guilty in June to the slayings and other charges under a deal to spare him a death sentence.A panel of six high-ranking soldiers is charged with deciding whether Bales should spend the rest of his life in prison or be eligible for parole after 20 years. To win a lighter sentence, Bales' team must convince at least two of the six jurors that he deserves leniency. On Wednesday, Army prosecutors rested their case after calling five more witnesses, including the final two of nine Afghan villagers who testified after traveling more than 7,000 miles to confront Bales in person for the first time.Defense attorneys then launched into their case, calling Bill Bales and a former next-door neighbor, Bob Durham, who broke down when describing how a teenage Bales helped him care for his profoundly disabled son for years."As a single parent, I needed someone to help me," Durham said. "And Bobby was extremely good at that."Examining state of mindAfter Wednesday's proceedings, Bales' defense lawyer, John Henry Browne, told reporters he expects to delve into Bales' mental-health issues during Thursday's proceedings."I don't think anyone with a rational mind could say Bob Bales didn't snap," Browne said. "We're not trying to 'paint' that for the jury. That's just what happened."Browne said he plans to call Bales' doctor and other medical experts, as well as character witnesses, to help show that circumstances exist to warrant leniency. The Seattle defense lawyer has said that post-traumatic stress, a traumatic brain injury and steroid, drug and alcohol use all factored into Bales' state of mind.Bales will also apologize for his crimes -- but he won't be questioned by prosecutors. Browne said his client plans to use a military-court rule that allows the accused to give unsworn testimony without having to face cross-examination.Earlier Wednesday, cousins Khamal Adin and Haji Wasir, two middle-aged men wearing traditional Afghan dress, each recounted the human cmini storagernage they found after rushing to the village of Najiban the morning after Bales gunned down 11 members of their family.Wasir's mother, wife and six of his seven children -- including his 1½ -year-old daughter -- all had been shot at close range, Adin said."The dead bodies were piled and were actually on fire," he said through an interpreter. "They were set on fire."Wasir was destroyed by what he found there."When someone loses one child, you can imagine how devastating it is to your life," Wasir said through an interpreter. "But I lost an entire family."After prosecutors finished questioning him, Wasir tried to address the court, telling the judge: "There are things I have in my heart that I want to speak about, if I get a chance."The judge, Col. Jeffery Nance, apologized, explaining to Wasir he wasn't allowed to give unsolicited testimony.Col. Todd Wood, a Stryker Brigade commander stationed in Afghanistan at the time of the massacre, also explained how Bales' unprovoked attacks ignited angry protests outside the outpost at Camp Belambay, jeopardizing soldier safety there.Out of respect to victims' families, military commanders imposed a two-week "operational pause," Wood said, during which a Taliban cell infested the region, stockpiled weapons and laid explosive booby-traps that later had to be cleared."It set us back probably three weeks," he said. The Army has since made $980,000 in "condolence payments" to relatives of Bales' victims, Wood said, but U.S. relations with Afghan locals are "very strained.""It will probably be generations before we'll be able to gain some of that trust back," he said.A change after 9/11?When Bales' 55-year-old brother, Bill, took the stand, he described how the Bales boys grew up the sons of a hardworking father with drinking problems in Norwood, Ohio. His brother was a well-liked student-athlete who was fond of a good time, Bill Bales said.Robert Bales graduated from high school and went to Ohio State University before moving to live near the beach in Florida as a young adult, he added."We used to call him Good Time Bobby," Bill Bales said. But after the 9/11 attacks, Robert Bales quickly matured -- getting married to his wife, Kari, and enlisting in the Army, Bill Bales said."I know when the twin towers came down, that had an effect on Bobby," he said. His younger brother has since been deployed four times and become a model father to his two children, ages 6 and 3, he said.Prosecutors argued to Nance that Bales had not enlisted out of patriotism, but because he was under investigation for fraud for "suspicious deposits" into his bank account. The judge later allowed them to ask Bill Bales on cross-examination whether he knew about his younger brother's fraud case. The elder brother said he didn't.After the hearing, Browne told reporters Bales didn't run away to join the Army to avoid financial troubles. He added that his client's caring nature, depicted by witness testimony and childhood pictures shown in court Wednesday, is genuine."It's extraordinary, I think," Browne said of Bales' care for his mentally disabled neighbor. "It's nothing we made up. You saw the photographs."Lewis Kamb: 206-652-6611 or lkamb@seattletimes.com. Obituary: Floyd R. Ganassi / His rise in business epitomized the American dream
Source: Pittsburgh Post-GazetteAug.迷你倉庫 21--Floyd R. Ganassi, a Fox Chapel businessman and philanthropist who epitomized a rags-to-riches story and supported his son Chip's rise to stardom on the auto racing circuit, died Monday after a brief illness.Mr. Ganassi spent about a week in UPMC Shadyside with an undisclosed ailment before his death Monday, according to his daughter, Annette Ganassi. He was 87.Despite Mr. Ganassi's age, the turn of events was unexpected for a man who spent more than two hours a day on the treadmill walking 10 miles and daily showed up at the RIDC park offices of his holding company, FRG Group, for a full schedule, Ms. Ganassi said. While Mr. Ganassi certainly was known in the racing world, thanks in part to the exploits of his famous son and his presence at various racetracks -- a story last year on .autoweek.com mentioned how he "still roams race paddocks and entertains people in [the] hospitality area" -- he achieved renown in his own right as a shrewd investor with good people skills, a humble demeanor and business savvy."He had a tremendous read on people. He just had natural smarts with business. And he was a real people person," said Richard Hamilton, chairman of AAA East Central. "The guy had an uncanny business sense unlike any I've witnessed."Mr. Ganassi served since 1980 as a AAA board member, including a term as chairman from 1990 to 1993.Mr. Hamilton credited his longtime friend with being a key voice advocating the group's expansion and helping to fuel a move that broadened the local affiliate's reach and helped expand its membership more than 10-fold.But before serving with the AAA, before starting Westmoreland Paving in 1950 and then buying Davison Sand and Gravel in 1966, before serving on numerous boards that included Duquesne University, the Civic Light Opera a儲存d UPMC Passavant, Mr. Ganassi was born to relative poverty. He grew up the fourth of six children in Blythedale, a section of Elizabeth Township hard by the Youghiogheny River."Literally there was no bathroom in their house until my father in the '50s was able to put [one in]," Ms. Ganassi said. "He is truly the epitome of the American dream."Mr. Ganassi went to McKeesport High School but did not attend college. He fought in Germany in World War II, his daughter said. He rode a merry-go-round of employment -- paper boy, baggage handler, appliance salesman -- before starting his own business. His launch of Westmoreland Paving proved pivotal in his career. "He was self-taught and he had a tremendous mind. I would sit and listen to him talk, the plans he had, the businesses he had," said Pittsburgh defense attorney Jim Ecker, who served with Mr. Ganassi on several boards. His wife, Marie Moia Ganassi, whom he married in 1957, died in 2011.People described Mr. Ganassi as a modest person who would be just as at ease talking to a valet or a mechanic as he was while talking to Mexican billionaire and racing aficionado Carlos Slim.Mr. Hamilton recalled a phone call while visiting Mr. Ganassi's office one day."The secretary said, 'It's Carlos on the phone,' " Mr. Hamilton recalled. "I asked Floyd if he knew someone in Mexico."In addition to his children, Mr. Ganassi is survived by a brother, Victor, and a granddaughter. There is a viewing from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at John A. Freyvogel Sons, 4900 Centre Ave., Oakland. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church.Jonathan D. Hartness will continue to be advocate for new high school in Davie County
Source: Winston-Salem Journal, N.自存倉C.Aug. 21--Darrin Hartness has been superintendent of Davie County Schools since July 2011. In that time, he has taken the lead in pushing for a new high school, an issue that has divided county residents for years. Hartness oversees a system with more than 6,300 students and 12 schools. With students about to start back to school, Hartness answered a few questions through email.Q: What sorts of things are you doing these last few days to prepare for the first day of school?Answer: I am making final hiring decisions to ensure we have the right people in the right places to start the school year. We are fortunate to have little turnover in our district, but when we do have a vacancy our team recognizes that filling the vacancy with the best candidate is the most important decision we make. Our central office staff and principals have their lists of things that must be completed before the school year starts. I am in communication with and supporting them daily as they prepare for staff and students. We are also preparing for our opening convocation, and making sure our school campuses are ready for the first day of school. My goal is to ensure that our teachers have the resources and support they need in their classrooms to have a successful start.Q: What will be the immediate impact on kids from the recently passed state budget?Answer: Students may see larger class sizes since the state has not restored teaching positions we have lost over the past several years. In elementary schools, our teacher assistants will be working fewer hours, so students will not have as much contact with an assistant. Students may also be using an older textbook, since that state funding has not been restored. If a student takes driver's education this year, they will see an increase from $45 to $55 for taking that course. Otherwise, our students will be in a caring, nurturing environment and taught by some of the best teachers in the country.Q: By the end of this school year, you will know whether Davie County residents want a new high school. What will be your role in convincing people to vote for a new school?Answer: My role has been, and will continue to be, sharing facts about the need for a quality school environment. I will be out in the community encouraging people to get out to vote on the issue. I will continue to be speaking to groups who invite me to share facts about the plans developed by our architects, and the input we received from hundreds of citizens, parents, students and staff during the development of these plans. The residents of Davie County have been clear in the past that they did not want a second high school, and we have listened. After listening to people across the community, we have a plan for one new centrally located high school for all students, all programs and all athletics.I hear from people across our community every day who say they have not supported plans presented in the past, but they are behind the current proposals. My job is to communicate the facts about 迷你倉新蒲崗hat plan to people all across Davie County, so they can make an informed decision based on facts. I will continue to be an advocate for what the Board of Education has proposed as the best solution for children and the most cost-effective long-range solution for the community. If a group wants me to come out to share the facts about the plans for one new high school, they should contact my office at 751-5921.In May 2014, our citizens will have an opportunity to vote to provide our students and staff with a quality educational facility. I hope the people in our community will get out to vote and will invest in a new high school facility, just as the people in the 1950s stepped up to provide for future generations. Davie County has so much to offer and the future is bright; we must come together to solve this issue that has plagued our community for way too many years.Q: In light of the condition of Davie High School and the issue of overcrowding there, what is your argument for keeping students in the system to parents who may be considering sending their kids to high schools in other counties?Answer: First, I respect any parent's right to choose another public school or a private school outside of Davie County. I hope that before they consider such a decision they would visit Davie County High School and talk to students and teachers who work and learn on that campus every day. The facility has served this community well for 57 years, and we have a solution to address the aging facility issue. What I think parents will find when they visit is a staff that makes the very best out of the current situation. They will find a staff and student body that is a family. They will also find a tremendous variety of courses and learning experiences available to our students. They will not find the volume of challenging student behavior issues typically found in more urban schools. The staff truly cares about our students and provides an outstanding educational experience in spite of the aging facility. From a personal perspective, I would not have moved to Davie County and had my two daughters attend Davie County High School unless I felt they would receive a quality education, and my girls love their school!Q: Finally, you are one of the most public figures in Davie County. Name something from your personal life that people may not know about you.Answer: My family is the most important part of my life, and away from work you will most likely see me with Lisa, Madison and Molly. I play bass guitar, pick a little on my banjo, and enjoy singing around the house with my wife and girls. You may catch me filling in on bass for our praise band at First Baptist Church in Mocksville every once in a while. I also enjoy woodworking. Over the past several years, I have made a few pieces of furniture for my daughters.lodonnell@wsjournal.com(336) 727-7420Copyright: ___ (c)2013 Winston-Salem Journal (Winston Salem, N.C.) New Erie Neighborhood Watch hire loses job
Source: Erie Times-News, Pa.迷你倉Aug. 22--The new administrative assistant at the Erie Neighborhood Watch Council is out of a job less than two months into his tenure.Wesley Tolbert, who was hired June 25, was let go at the Watch Council meeting Tuesday night, he said in an e-mail to the Erie Times-News and a number of other organizations and individuals.Tolbert said he was not present for the vote. He wrote in the e-mail that he received a call Wednesday morning that "the new board of directors has discharged me from my position with the ENWC and reinstated the previous administrative person."Tolbert did not give a reason for his ouster. He wrote that the Watch Council owes him compensation for three workdays."As I had no fiscal responsibilities during my short time there, I am not responsible for financial problems that may arise," Tolbert wrote.Later in the day, he sent an e-mail to the Erie Times-News that continued that thought: "I had, in no way, financial responsibilities for the organization. I did not touch the funding, have any authority to use any funds or even have access to any bank accounts of the organization. I was in the process of writing a grant to the (Erie County Gaming Revenue Authority), but it had not even been submitted when this occurred. I will not become a fall guy for the Watch Council."The chairwoman of the Neighborhood Watch Council's 10-member board of directors, Jerri Allen, said she would have no comment.Another director, Sally Kohler, was present at the meeting Tuesday and said the directors unanimously voted to relieve Tolbert of his duties. Kohler said one of the reasons the board decided to dismiss Tolbert was because he did not present a funding plan soon enough to the board. At the direction of the other directors, Kohler said she telephoned the former administrative assistant of the Watch Council, Heidi Miles Wertz, and offered her the job. Her resi文件倉nation led the Watch Council to hire Tolbert.Kohler said Wertz had not decided whether to return. Wertz could not be reached for comment.Tuesday's meeting was tumultuous for another reason. Kohler, 83, who helped found the Erie Watch Council in 1997, said the directors reinstated her to the board after she was ousted on July 18.Allen, who signed the letter dismissing Kohler, wrote that Kohler had failed to attend the required number of board meetings -- meetings that Kohler said she did not know about. Also on Tuesday night, another director, Sue Wansor, said she walked out in protest before the board dismissed Tolbert. Wansor said she also quit her directorship. She said she was upset at the board's treatment of Tolbert, though she said she had left before the board gave the reasons for the dismissal. Wansor criticized the board for what she said is inaction."The board is unable to make a solid decision," she said.Of Tolbert, Wansor said he "was new to the job. He didn't always do things the way maybe we thought he should. But he had a lot of good ideas."The Watch Council's hiring of Tolbert came as the organization launched plans to form more Neighborhood Watch groups and to help them obtain grants and other funding. The groups' participation is a key element of an anti-crime initiative in the city of Erie and Erie County.Tolbert after he was hired said the Watch Council had started to "stagnate.""So it's time to bring it into the 21st century," he said in an interview in early July. "It's time for the ... Watch Council to grow and be relevant."Erie County has 67 Neighborhood Watch groups, 60 of which are in the city of Erie.ED PALATTELLA can be reached at 870-1813 or by e-mail.

Bo Xilai:his descent into darkness
After heady years spent climbing the party ladder, the colourful life of Bo Xilai will be judged by what happens in a grim Shandong courtJanuary, 2012No36 Zhongshansi Road, a compound of rust-coloured villas secluded behind thick foliage in downtown Chongqing , is easily ignored from the street.self storage And that is just the way the people who live there like it.There are no names on the brick houses and the armed soldiers at the gate ensure what goes on inside stays there. There is good reason for the secrecy. No36 Zhongshansi Road is where the power is.Inside, Bo Xilai , one of the Communist Party’s highest-flying officials, was the king of his domain. He was sometimes referred to by local officials as “building No3”, after the house in which his family lived. Bo rode a wave that swept him to the top of the megacity of 32 million people and onto the national stage.Had he clung on a bit longer, the 64-year-old would very possibly have joined the Standing Committee of the Politburo at the 18th party congress, and perhaps climbed even higher. But even the best-laid plans can be derailed. The governor’s fortunes started to unravel in building No1 of the compound on the morning of January 29 last year when he slapped his trusted crime-buster Wang Lijun in the face.Bo is mad. “Ingrate,” he yells at Wang. He smashes a glass and waves his hand in Wang’s face.Wang unsuccessfully tries to dodge the slap. Blood streams out of his mouth, according to senior police officers and businessmen who were later told of the clash.“The conflict was made public after Wang was slapped,” said Guo Weiguo , former deputy police chief of the municipality and a protg of Wang’s, according to a report of his interrogation carried by Xinhua. The slap happened a day after Wang told Bo that his wife, Gu Kailai , was a key suspect in the murder two months earlier of British businessman Neil Heywood. Wang, who initially helped Gu cover up the murder, wanted to review the case after his relationship with Gu turned sour and his post was threatened by a probe by party disciplinary watchdogs.Wang’s flightSeveral sources said Wang and Gu had an intimate relationship. Wang was the only person who could get into building No3 at any time without permission. A leading lawyer said Bo was angry after learning of his wife’s affair with Wang.“Wang was trying to threaten Bo in the hope that Bo could protect him from the investigation, but Bo would never tolerate such a threat,” said a Chongqing businessman and Bo adviser. “Wang was nothing but a tool for him to reach the peak of his power. He had made it clear he was the boss since coming to Chongqing.”When Wang found out a few days later that three colleagues were also under investigation, he thought about fleeing, Xinhua reported.Gu and Wang had lunch in a private room at police headquarters on February 4. Waiters outside the room heard Gu crying. On February 6, Wang sought refuge in the US consulate in Chengdu , where he told US diplomats about Gu’s involvement in Heywood’s murder.Wang’s dramatic escape made headlines around the world the next day. But Bo carried on as usual, going on a sightseeing tour in Yunnan and feeding the seagulls at Dian Lake, near Kunming . The provincial capital is also home to the 14th Group Army, a People’s Liberation Army unit led by Bo’s father, Bo Yibo , in the 1930s.Local media reported that Bo was there to “cherish the memory of revolutionary ancestors”. But online sites were running hot with speculation that with his career facing disaster, Bo was courting political support from the military.A person with close ties with Bo’s family said he had been unruffled and remained confident he could turn the situation around. He said Bo looked relaxed and there were few signs of anxiety at a family reunion dinner in Beijing in early March.“Bo gave his family members the impression that he would handle Wang’s defection attempt well,” the person said. “As a princeling [son of a revolutionary leader], Bo was excessively confident his family connections were up to any task and thus became too reckless.”On the defensiveOn March 9, in Beijing’s Great Hall of the People during the National People’s Congress, Bo openly defended himself and his family in a two-hour press conference.More than 150 journalists crowded into the large meeting room to soak up his every word, with hundreds more blocked from entering. Bo held court in the middle of the room, smiling confidently. After innocuous questions from state-controlled media, a Japanese correspondent from the Asahi newspaper finally raised the issue of his right-hand man’s dramatic move.“After this problem arose, I felt sad,” Bo replied in a clear, soft voice. “There was negligence on my part when I appointed people.”Just then, his phone vibrated and, after checking the number, he left the room, telling Chongqing major Huang Qifan , who was sitting next to him, to “go on answering the questions”.When he returned a few minutes later he became agitated and began to defend his family. “Some people are pouring dirty water on Chongqing, myself and my family,” Bo said. “They even said my son, who is studying abroad, was driving a red Ferrari. It is total nonsense. It makes me very mad.”Bo and Gu’s 25-year-old son, Bo Guagua , has denied driving a red Ferrari to the Beijing residence of then US ambassador Jon Huntsman in 2011 to pick up his daughter for a date. The younger Bo is now enrolled at New York’s Columbia Law School. As he spoke of his anger, Bo leaned back and laughed. “Not only my son, but my wife and I have no personal assets … my wife closed her law firm 20 years ago to avoid gossip … I’m very touched and feel deeply sorry for her sacrifice.”The details of the mysterious phone call remain unclear, but some insiders say it was from his brother Bo Xicheng, telling him Gu had been detained.Five days later, then-premier Wen Jiabao said in his annual press conference on the last day of the NPC session that the authorities should learn lessons from Wang’s attempted defection.“We will give the people the results of the investigation and the handling [of the case], so that it can withstand the test of law and history,” Wen said. He then launched into a criticism of Chongqing’s leadership, without mentioning Bo by name. While the speech was not a sentence handed down by a court, in a country where politics trumps the judiciary it signalled Bo’s political doom. It’s a system that Bo must understand well.‘Great prospects’Born in Beijing three months before Mao Zedong proclaimed the founding of the People’s Republic in October 1949, Bo is the fourth son of the late Bo Yibo, a revolutionary hero who emerged as a prominent figure in the new government. The young Bo grew up at a time of national optimism, with Mao declaring that China would take its place as the most powerful country in the world.Mao’s emphasis on the political mobilisation of ordinary citizens, especially the poor, clearly left a deep impression on young Bo, who practised similar ideas decades later in Chongqing.“In Mao’s ideology, the masses were the source of his power, and it was important to get their support,” said historian Zhang Lifan . “Bo is a blind follower of Mao’s ideology. He loves the mass campaigns.”His life was turned upside down in 1966 when Mao launched the Cultural Revolution. Bo’s father was labelled a “rightist” and a “counter-revolutionary” and purged from his posts. Bo suffered too, spending five years in a labour camp. His father was tortured and his mother, Hu Ming, committed suicide, according to official accounts, though some historians say she died after being torture by red guards. The accusations stemmed from a power struggle between Mao and former Politburo Standing Committee chairman Liu Shaoqi . Bo’s father was widely seen as a close ally of Liu.After being released in 1972, Bo worked at a machine repair factory in Beijing. He enrolled at the prestigious Peking University in 1977, after taking the first university entrance exam after its reinstatement after a decade of nationwide chaos.Unlike many of his contemporaries in the party leadership who studied engineering, Bo decided on world history. But in his second year he switched to a master’s programme in international journalism at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, graduating in 1982.Hu Sisheng, a former reporter with the party mouthpiece People’s Daily, was one of his supervisors. “Bo Xilai was a young man with great prospects. He had no government ranking, no money, but dreamed of being a reporter on international affairs,” Hu wrote in his memoir.Bo didn’t become a journalist.Like most mainland journalism students at the time, he studied the Marxist view of journalism, which holds that news and publications are weapons to be used by the authorities and that the wellbeing of the party came ahead of individual liberty. Bo learned well, and later went on to become exceptionally skilled in manipulating media coverage to boost his public profile.Politician on the riseIn 1984, Bo became the party head of Jin county, an underdeveloped part of Dalian , Liaoning . His father, who was rehabilitated in 1978, was the country’s top political adviser at the time. The low-key appointment was seen by some as an attempt to avoid allegations of nepotism. Bo received little attention as a low-ranking official but when he became more famous, in 2001, state media recalled his days in Jin county and praised him for “managing the ancient county in perfect order”.He spent the next 16 years in Dalian, going on to become mayor in 1993 and party secretary in 1999.During that time the city achieved phenomenal growth as the mainland embraced reform and opened up the economy. The many infrastructure projects included the mainland’s first expressway, linking it to the provincial capital, Shenyang .In a system where regional officials are judged largely on their economic prowess, Bo did a great job, with Dalian’s GDP growing more than 12 per cent a year, more than the country’s average. Some critics said the growth had much to do with Bo’s father who, although retired, remained close to then president Jiang Zemin . Jiang visited the port city on its 100th anniversary in August 1999 and stayed for an unusually long 10 days. During the trip, he wrote a piece of calligraphy describing the city as a “pearl of the north”.Regardless, the city’s residents appreciated the improved infrastructure and public facilities and mainland media hailed Dalian as the country’s “most beautiful city”.Bo enjoyed the applause and stepped up landscaping projects and propaganda. He instructed that a type of grass known as xilai – pronounced the same as his given name, though written using different Chinese characters – be planted all 迷你倉ver the city so that whenever tourists or party leaders visited they would see vast expanses of grass and new parks and plazas.Despite his achievements in Dalian and his princeling background, Bo failed to win election to the party’s 15th national congress in 1997, which could have secured his elevation to the party’s elite Central Committee. A retired official in Shenyang said resentment among local officials was the biggest factor.“Many higher-up officials in Liaoning disliked him. He was insolent, easily got mad and verbally abused other people,” the former official said. “He believed he was a princeling and should be treated differently.”Governor and ministerDespite their opposition, Bo was named Liaoning governor in 2001.The day he left Dalian for his new posting, the citizens swarmed into the streets waving banners and posters saying farewell. He shook hands with thousands and thanked them profusely. “The whole town turned out to say goodbye to their good mayor Bo,” local media reported, adding that tears were flowing and that it took Bo more than half an hour to walk 200 metres because he was surrounded by so many people. The story was picked up by media nationwide, and commentators compared him to honest and upright officials from China’s ancient history. But those who disliked him suspected that everything he did in the city was just a show.Liaoning party secretary Wen Shizhen, technically Bo’s superior, criticised him on many occasions – without naming him – for “developing the city like Europe but the countryside like Africa”.“Officials who love vanity projects are those eagerly seeking quick success and instant benefits,” Wen said in a 2005 interview with Oriental Outlook. “Most of the projects are not urgently needed but only serve as shows to impress higher officials.”On the sidelines of last year’s party congress, when asked for his thoughts on the downfall of Bo, Wen burst into laughter. The criticism did not stop Bo rising further, and that may have reinforced his belief in the power of propaganda, leading to bigger shows of mass support that culminated in campaigns in Chongqing that contributed to his eventual downfall.Bo started to gain international fame when he was named commerce minister in 2004. His shrewd negotiating skills, good English and liberal outlook made him a star as he handled trade disputes with the United States and Europe and attracted additional foreign investment. But one ministry official said people were scared of Bo because he would shout abuse at anyone he was dissatisfied with. “He was like the king and took the ministry as his personal territory,” the official said.Bo also attracted many supporters no matter where he worked. China Comment, a popular party magazine, reported that a stand at a trade fair collapsed because too many people squeezed onto it, trying to catch a glimpse of Bo. It also said that its reporter noticed a tall, beautiful woman standing next to Bo during an interview. She later said she was a big fan and had pretended to be a reporter to get close to him. There was another dramatic scene when Bo left his ministerial position in late 2007. A video posted online showed him walking the red carpet at a farewell party. He made a speech while holding the arm of his mother-in-law, Fan Chengxiu, who was also a revolutionary veteran. His wife Gu was standing behind them.“Let’s sing a song. I will take the lead, ” Bo proposed. “Union is strength, union is strength, one, two three.”The revolutionary song echoed through the chamber.A ‘springboard’After being elevated to membership of the party’s 25-man Politburo in 2007 Bo was sent to Chongqing, taking over from Wang Yang , now a vice-premier, in the southwestern metropolis.“He wanted nothing but quick success, so everything he did in Chongqing was aimed at going back to Beijing to become someone bigger,” said the Chongqing businessman. “Chongqing was his springboard.”After he arrived in Chongqing, Bo invited a group of local figures to make suggestions for managing the city. But at least one businessman soon found out that Bo only wanted to work on things that offered fast returns.“I made some suggestions on education and to provide a better environment for poor kids, but Bo’s assistant Wu Wenkang told me those proposals were time consuming and it would be hard for them to have a huge impact on the country,” the businessman said.Even though his family was tortured during the Cultural Revolution, Bo’s thirst for power saw him turn to techniques that have been compared with that bitter period of Chinese history. He embarked on a series of spectacular campaigns to stay in the national limelight, including the staging of mass public gatherings to sing nostalgic, revolutionary songs, while also launching heavy-handed crackdowns on organised crime. At the same time the city launched its most ambitious low-income rental housing scheme and a massive tree-planting campaign, in which the government spent billions of yuan on ginkgo trees.“Bo loves the ginkgo tree because it’s tall and noble, just like him,” said a district-level police chief, who had to spend 600,000 yuan to plant two ginkgo trees in front of his offices to please Bo. Ordinary citizens complained about the expensive trees, but they still enjoyed telling visitors about their city’s new look.Almost every cab driver said Bo had made fundamental, positive changes to the landscape and praised the affordable public housing and other welfare programmes. The crackdownWhile Bo found support among Chongqing’s poor and working class by using state funds to boost consumption and invest in infrastructure, his high-profile campaigns raised eyebrows among the party elite. His cracked down on officials who supported gangsters, including the municipality’s police chief, Wen Qiang , widely seen as a close ally of previous Chongqing party chiefs Wang Yang and He Guoqiang .Bo’s flamboyant bubble burst when Wen Qiang was executed soon after his verdict was announced, without even the chance to say farewell to his family. Analysts said top party leaders were alarmed by the move, sensing that it showed Bo was cold-blooded and would crack down on political enemies unmercifully.“The top leaders thought he would always make trouble for them,” said Professor Mao Shoulong , a political scientist at Renmin University. He was criticised for neglecting due process and using torture to extract confessions. Beijing-based lawyer Li Zhuang , who gave legal advice to criminal suspects, was convicted of fabricating evidence after being tortured – a move critics said was designed to deter lawyers from helping suspects. One local businessman, Chen Guixue , recalled that the police had once tormented him with the claim: “Don’t you realise that our chief, Bo, will become the president in the future, and that our police boss Wang [Lijun] will become minister [of public security]?”Chen, who was tortured for 37 days in a Chongqing motel room by police officers who wanted him to confess to bribery linked to former Chongqing mayor Wang Hongju , said the police told him that Bo was the law. Wang, who became the city’s mayor in 2002, was transferred in 2009.“Soon after the start of the crackdown on the gangs, we understood a witch hunt against dissenting opinions had started,” said the former deputy head of a district-level police bureau, who was purged after his brother was imprisoned for being a close ally of Wen Qiang and Wang Hongju.Silencing dissentAs well as attacking gangs, Bo launched a vigorous campaign to promote traditional communist ideology, sending bureaucrats to work alongside farmers in the countryside and dragooning them into his revolutionary song festivals. He also maintained a tight grip on the media, sending quotations from Mao to millions of mobile phone users and forcing the local television station to drop advertising and adopt programming that extolled revolutionary virtues.Bo summoned Chongqing television officials to a meeting in late 2010, where he suggested halting all advertising from the start of 2011.“Chief Bo, the problem is we have sold the advertising for next year,” a station director told him. “I don’t care. You don’t talk about money with me,” Bo said angrily, according to a person from the city’s propaganda organs who was briefed about the meeting. He pulled a sheet of paper from his jacket and said: “Take a look. I have a list of shows that you can air on the channel.”After that, the person who was briefed said, everyone in the room realised Bo had made his decision and there was nothing more to discuss. He also said Bo checked video footage of himself before it was broadcast and sometimes ordered several modifications. “He managed his image so carefully,” the person said. “He knew what was important to him so that he could realise his goals.”The biggest red song festival was held in June 2011, with Bo inviting 108 choirs from across the mainland to participate at the Chongqing Olympic Centre. More than 100,000 people were involved, waving red flags and singing patriotic songs.“These are songs that have saved the nation, built up the nation and strengthened the nation … There are some who say, is this not too ‘leftist’? Is this not a return to the Cultural Revolution? If only you could be there to experience it for yourself, you would know that that is not the case,” Bo told the Chongqing Daily. But if Bo saw the video footage of himself standing on top of the sports centre waving to his fans, he might well be reminded of classic images of Mao on the Tiananmen rostrum welcoming his red guards.Bo’s powers had peaked. Today, little more than two years later, Bo is in a prison cell, facing a trial today that will dictate the rest of his life.“Bo’s problem was that he had too much power. The lust for power was the only goal of his life,” said Zhang Sizhi , the country’s most eminent lawyer. “He would have become another Mao if he grabbed more power.”Zhang, who defended the “Gang of Four”, the radical leftists led by Mao’s widow Jiang Qing , said Bo’s case reflected the drawback of the entire bureaucratic system. “Because of the lack of supervision and balance of power, Bo’s saga could happen to any official in the country. For people like him, the pursuit of absolute power has become a maniacal passion,” he said. The master of the compound at 36 Zhongshansi Road is now Sun Zhengcai , one of just two members of the Politburo born after 1960 and a front runner to join the next generation of national leaders. The villas don’t seem to have changed during all the drama of the past year, still disengaged from the outside world, their inhabitants rarely bothering to peer through the thickets and brambles at their subjects, who are left to wonder at it all.文件倉
