Source: Winston-Salem Journal, N.自存倉C.Aug. 21--Darrin Hartness has been superintendent of Davie County Schools since July 2011. In that time, he has taken the lead in pushing for a new high school, an issue that has divided county residents for years. Hartness oversees a system with more than 6,300 students and 12 schools. With students about to start back to school, Hartness answered a few questions through email.Q: What sorts of things are you doing these last few days to prepare for the first day of school?Answer: I am making final hiring decisions to ensure we have the right people in the right places to start the school year. We are fortunate to have little turnover in our district, but when we do have a vacancy our team recognizes that filling the vacancy with the best candidate is the most important decision we make. Our central office staff and principals have their lists of things that must be completed before the school year starts. I am in communication with and supporting them daily as they prepare for staff and students. We are also preparing for our opening convocation, and making sure our school campuses are ready for the first day of school. My goal is to ensure that our teachers have the resources and support they need in their classrooms to have a successful start.Q: What will be the immediate impact on kids from the recently passed state budget?Answer: Students may see larger class sizes since the state has not restored teaching positions we have lost over the past several years. In elementary schools, our teacher assistants will be working fewer hours, so students will not have as much contact with an assistant. Students may also be using an older textbook, since that state funding has not been restored. If a student takes driver's education this year, they will see an increase from $45 to $55 for taking that course. Otherwise, our students will be in a caring, nurturing environment and taught by some of the best teachers in the country.Q: By the end of this school year, you will know whether Davie County residents want a new high school. What will be your role in convincing people to vote for a new school?Answer: My role has been, and will continue to be, sharing facts about the need for a quality school environment. I will be out in the community encouraging people to get out to vote on the issue. I will continue to be speaking to groups who invite me to share facts about the plans developed by our architects, and the input we received from hundreds of citizens, parents, students and staff during the development of these plans. The residents of Davie County have been clear in the past that they did not want a second high school, and we have listened. After listening to people across the community, we have a plan for one new centrally located high school for all students, all programs and all athletics.I hear from people across our community every day who say they have not supported plans presented in the past, but they are behind the current proposals. My job is to communicate the facts about 迷你倉新蒲崗hat plan to people all across Davie County, so they can make an informed decision based on facts. I will continue to be an advocate for what the Board of Education has proposed as the best solution for children and the most cost-effective long-range solution for the community. If a group wants me to come out to share the facts about the plans for one new high school, they should contact my office at 751-5921.In May 2014, our citizens will have an opportunity to vote to provide our students and staff with a quality educational facility. I hope the people in our community will get out to vote and will invest in a new high school facility, just as the people in the 1950s stepped up to provide for future generations. Davie County has so much to offer and the future is bright; we must come together to solve this issue that has plagued our community for way too many years.Q: In light of the condition of Davie High School and the issue of overcrowding there, what is your argument for keeping students in the system to parents who may be considering sending their kids to high schools in other counties?Answer: First, I respect any parent's right to choose another public school or a private school outside of Davie County. I hope that before they consider such a decision they would visit Davie County High School and talk to students and teachers who work and learn on that campus every day. The facility has served this community well for 57 years, and we have a solution to address the aging facility issue. What I think parents will find when they visit is a staff that makes the very best out of the current situation. They will find a staff and student body that is a family. They will also find a tremendous variety of courses and learning experiences available to our students. They will not find the volume of challenging student behavior issues typically found in more urban schools. The staff truly cares about our students and provides an outstanding educational experience in spite of the aging facility. From a personal perspective, I would not have moved to Davie County and had my two daughters attend Davie County High School unless I felt they would receive a quality education, and my girls love their school!Q: Finally, you are one of the most public figures in Davie County. Name something from your personal life that people may not know about you.Answer: My family is the most important part of my life, and away from work you will most likely see me with Lisa, Madison and Molly. I play bass guitar, pick a little on my banjo, and enjoy singing around the house with my wife and girls. You may catch me filling in on bass for our praise band at First Baptist Church in Mocksville every once in a while. I also enjoy woodworking. Over the past several years, I have made a few pieces of furniture for my daughters.lodonnell@wsjournal.com(336) 727-7420Copyright: ___ (c)2013 Winston-Salem Journal (Winston Salem, N.C.)
