Halloween horror unleashed at Universal City theme park
Source: Daily News, Los AngelesAug.存倉 28--For the zombies to stalk Halloween Horror Nights this month at Universal Studios Hollywood, it won't be just blood to scare the beejeezus out of lost soul visitors. It'll be the inner demons released from hundreds of Hollywood horror actors."It's taking makeup to the next level," said Larry Bones, lead makeup artist for the Universal theme park horror show.

Governor material Mary Burke has a track record of executive experience
Source: The Wisconsin State JournalAug.迷你倉 26--Mary Burke is "so not a politician."That assessment of the former Commerce secretary and Trek Bicycle executive by a former colleague could explain why a few months ago Burke wasn't on the radar screen of possible Democratic candidates for governor in 2014.It would be a contrast with Gov. Scott Walker that Democrats see as a potential advantage should Burke decide to run. She also may have an edge over other Democrats because she is amultimillionaire -- Burke paid, on average, $103,000 in state taxes alone each of the past five years -- who could self-finance part of her campaign.Burke has said she is considering entering the race but hasn't yet formed a campaign. She spent the past couple of months meeting with key Democrats and business leaders around the state to assess a possible run.Burke's only experience in elected office has been as a Madison School Board member since 2012, but she has held several leadership roles during her career -- in the private, nonprofit and government sectors -- that provide insight into what kind of governor she might be.At Trek, the Waterloo-based company founded by her father in 1976, Burke oversaw the opening of offices in seven European countries and later developed its forecasting and strategic planning department. While at Trek, she tutored poor minority children at the fledgling Boys & Girls Club of Dane County, which led to her joining the organization's board. In 2002, she became board president. She left Trek in 2004 to commit to raising $6.25 million for the club's Allied Drive expansion. Her business and philanthropic work caught the attention of then-Gov. Jim Doyle, who in January 2005 appointed her Commerce secretary, a position she held for two-and-a-half years. She has held other leadership roles on local boards, most notably in 2003 becoming the first female president of Maple Bluff Country Club, where she honed a single-digit golf handicap.Should she run for governor, Burke would be vying to become the first woman to hold the state's highest office, and the first female gubernatorial nominee for a major party ticket in Wisconsin. Winnebago County Executive Mark Harris and Sen. Kathleen Vinehout, D-Alma, said they too are considering a run, while others say they haven't ruled it out.Statewide candidates typically come with more political experience than Burke, but the recent election to the U.S. Senate of businessman Ron Johnson shows "that doesn't have to be the end of the story," said Charles Franklin, a Marquette University Law School public policy professor.Rep. Cory Mason, D-Racine, one of several Democrats who met with Burke to discuss her candidacy, said her broad experience and success in different sectors make her an appealing candidate. He said many politicians, including himself, are waiting until Burke announces her plans before considering a possible run."What makes her exciting as a non-politician is she seems interested in the job and serving the state," Mason said.Republicans, meanwhile, are preparing to paint Burke as an out-of-touch Madison liberal representing the job creation policies of the Doyle administration."As someone who has blatantly supported the failed policies of the past and whose candidacy was completely formed behind closed doors, it's clear that Mary Burke would have a hard time connecting with Main Street, Wisconsin," state Republican Party executive director Joe Fadness said.Burke declined an interview for this story but said in an email the taxes she paid reflect her shareholder stake in Trek, which increased after her father died in 2008.Helping grow TrekBurke was born in Madison in 1959, but grew up in Wauwatosa and Hartland near Milwaukee. She was the second oldest of five, and has three sisters and a brother, John, who now runs Trek. She majored in finance at Georgetown University and received her MBA from Harvard Business School in 1985. Just before graduation, she asked her father for a job at Intrepid, his Brookfield-based holding company, but there wasn't an opening, so he turned her down.Six months later, after working as a consultant in New York, she was hired at Intrepid as vice president of finance. But she soon missed the big city and returned to start Manhattan Intelligence, a service for consumers about businesses. It struggled to raise enough capital, and by 1990, she sold her stake and took a job leading Trek's European operations. In one year, Burke opened offices in four countries, which meant setting up legal entities, hiring staff, leasing office space and establishing office protocol, said John Burke, who was her boss.Steve Lindenau, who ran Trek's German operations at the time, said when he learned the company founder's daughter would be his boss, he wondered if it was a case of nepotism. It wasn't long before he considered Burke one of the smartest people he knew.Lindenau was used to making decisions from the gut based on his experience growing up around bike shops. Burke insisted on a different approach based on analyzing data and assembling all available information."The business changed (to) being less of an emotional way of making decisions and more of a pragmatic approach," said Lindenau, who now runs two bicycle companies in California. "It was helpful for the bottom line, for sure."Burke left Trek, and Europe, after agreeing her position was redundant and took six months off to snowboard in Arge文件倉tina and Colorado -- a decision Republicans have already criticized, citing polling done on that detail by Democrats. After working at a bicycle industry trade organization, Burke returned to Trek in Wisconsin in 1995 to work on global sales forecasts.John Burke said his sister came in and "tore the process apart" using data analysis to reduce inventory levels and increase profits."It went from one of the worst things we did as a company to one of the best," he said. "Mary has always been somebody who takes a look at things and thinks it can be done better."Boys & Girls ClubBurke applied her business acumen as president of the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County, but it led to friction with the club's executive director, Juan Jose Lopez.Burke started as a tutor in 1998, but it wasn't long before the club's founding president, Peter Brey, and founding director, the Rev. David Smith, took her to a University of Wisconsin basketball game to talk up joining the board.Burke flexed her executive skills on the board -- reviewing financial statements on weekends, generating fundraising ideas and laying the groundwork for transforming the South Side neighborhood club into a citywide organization. In 2002, she was unanimously elected president by fellow board members."She was focused, she had the ability to raise money, she loved the cause and she had the Rolodex that is such a key part of getting anything done in those particular arenas," Brey said.Lopez came on as executive director around the same time, and a conflict emerged between them as Burke micromanaged the day-to-day operations of the club, Smith said."Mary wasn't going to be pushed around by anybody, including her executive director," Smith said. "She broke a few eggs, but she made a wonderful omelet, and the community is still eating that omelet."Brey said Burke and Lopez had different views on how to move the organization forward, and Lopez wasn't executing the way Burke wanted. Lopez declined to comment."To get to where it is now, there's never easy decisions, but no one can argue the path they took has led to one of the most successful organizations in the entire Boys & Girls Club family," Brey said, "and Mary was the driving force."When Lopez's successor, Marcia Hendrickson, also left abruptly, Burke held the position unpaid for about six months before hiring current executive director Michael Johnson in late 2009. The two agreed the director was in charge of day-to-day club operations and the board was in charge of governance.Johnson credits Burke with putting in place the strongest financial controls he's seen at a nonprofit organization. A board officer must sign off on expenses over $1,000, and all mail must be opened by two club employees. An employee had embezzled money from the organization before Burke joined the board. In the past decade, the organization has increased the number of children it serves from 300 to 3,000, expanded the bike ride fundraiser Burke started from $50,000 to $400,000 and grown its operating budget from $250,000 to $3.5 million.Burke also started the AVID/TOPS student achievement partnership with the Madison School District, raised money for the Allied Drive expansion and established a $1.5 million operating endow-ment. She is the club's top donor."Mary is real big on numbers, real big on data and real big on results," Johnson said. "She's a no-nonsense person to make sure that the people around her feel valued, but there's a sense of direction and a sense of focus."Not a politicianAs secretary of the state's Commerce Department, Burke managed 400 employees and a $221 million budget. Madison economic development director Aaron Olver -- who was Burke's deputy secretary and later Commerce secretary under Doyle -- said his first impression of Burke was she didn't come from the political establishment. She introduced lean manufacturing principles in the department, seeking to reduce waste and improve efficiency. For example, after learning that each office in the department bought its own supplies, she created a central supply depot for everyone to use.Dissatisfied with the lack of employee input in decision-making, Burke created employee labor management councils to help solve problems in the department."Her M.O. is to get the right table of folks together to tackle a problem," Olver said.Like other secretaries, much of Burke's time was spent negotiating economic development loans with private companies. That included a multimillion-dollar package to help reopen a struggling paper mill in Park Falls and build a biofuel refinery to make the company profitable.Last fall, the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp., which replaced the Commerce Department in 2011, reported that it had lost track of $12.2 million in defaulted loans, including about $5 million from the Park Falls company.Olver described Burke as "so not a politician" because she was never one to think about image or campaign donations or public opinion. At the time, she described herself as an independent but leaned more Democratic by the time she left the job, Olver said."She did not come in thinking about the politics or optics of her decisions," Olver said. "She came in focused on problem-solving and getting results."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Wisconsin State Journal (Madison, Wis.) Middletown health plan tops most in cost, coverage
Source: Asbury Park Press, N.迷你倉沙田J.Aug. 23--MIDDLETOWN -- Need a heart transplant? It's free if you're a Middletown employee.Catch a nasty cold and want to see the doctor? That's almost free: just a $10 co-pay.Middletown Township's health benefits are so good that its insurance broker joked the coverage would fall under a nonexistent "Double Diamond" rating on the Affordable Care Act's four-tier ranking. (That ranking actually includes Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum coverage.)The township's benefit plan came under scrutiny this week after the Asbury Park Press learned that officials have been reducing hours for part-time workers to avoid offering insurance required when provisions of the health care act kick in.At least a few Middletown residents were incredulous about the $31,000-per-year cost of the township-provided health benefits, so much so that they assumed the cost cited in Wednesday's Asbury Park Press was wrong. It wasn't. The number represents the maximum Middletown would have to pay if an employee opted for family coverage and a number that includes dental care, Township Administrator Anthony Mercantante said.Using the $31,000 figure, it could cost Middletown up to $775,000 to offer health benefits for the 25 employees whose hours were cut.If those employees opted to insure just themselves or, say, just a spouse or just a child, the amount would be lower, Mercantante said. But even if the amount were half of the $775,000 estimate, it would be too much to suddenly add to the township's budget if it didn't have to, he said."It's irresponsible to suddenly decide you are going to spend that much money when there is no revenue to pay for it," he said.As it is now, Middletown, which is self-insured, expects to pays about $9.3 million this year for employee and retiree health bills, about 14 percent of its overall $67.9 million budget. Employee contributions are expected to offset about $520,000 of that cost. The township's costs represent about 18 percent of the municipal tax levy. It costs about $337 for taxpayers who own an average Middletown home worth $375,500.For that cost, employees have no deductible for using doctors in network of QualCare, the firm Middletown uses to handle its health bills. The township pays all of the cost for items like semi-private hospital roo迷你倉價錢s, surgery, emergency room visits (unless they aren't actual emergencies), X-rays and organ transplants, according to the schedule of benefits in Middletown's employee handbook. It does not cover procedures like abortion unless the mother's life is endangered, cosmetic surgery unless the condition is due to an accidental injury, sex changes or obesity unless it is medically necessary for morbid obesity. When a co-pay is required, it's $10.But even if an employee decided to use out-of-network doctors, Middletown employees are required to pay 80 percent of the cost after meeting, in most cases, a $200 deductible for family coverage. Police officers have a $400 out-of-network deductible for family coverage. That would be what's considered high-cost coverage, which had been referred to as "Cadillac coverage" during the health care reform debates, said Gary Claxton, a vice-president of the Kaiser Family Foundation, a nonprofit and nonpartisan organization focusing on the major health care issues."That's not what most people have," he said. The average health care costs in the Northeast is $17,441 for family coverage and $6,117 for single coverage, according to the 2013 survey of employer-sponsored insurance by Kaiser and the Health Research & Educational Trust. That survey shows that employees of large firms have, on average, an $884 deductible for in-network, single coverage, while the average deductible is $1,715 for employees of small firms. On average, workers pay a $23 co-pay to see primary physicians and $35 for specialists, the survey showed. It's not just Middletown that offers better-than-average coverage. Middletown's offerings are comparable to benefits offered in the New Jersey's State Health Benefits Plans. The State Department of Treasury, which administers those plans, was not able to provide cost breakdowns for single and family coverage by the end of business Friday.Asbury Park, which is not cutting back its part-time employee hours to avoid offering health coverage, participates in one of the state benefits plans. Health benefit costs range from $10,281 to cover a single person to $25,702 for family coverage.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 Asbury Park Press (Neptune, N.J.) Service remains the top priority at Sam Harris Uniforms
Source: Journal Star, Peoria, Ill.迷你倉出租Aug. 24--The Sam Harris dry goods store was one of the first places anyone could buy Levis blue jeans in Peoria after the store opened in 1902, and the current owners say it is now one of the last places where shoppers can find the same type of early-era customer service."That's never changed," said Karla Dennhardt, who has owned Sam Harris Uniforms with her husband, Todd, since 1990. "That's always been the same."The business itself has changed drastically over the last 111 years, formerly offering a range of goods that included surplus military clothing and uniforms for all types of public safety personnel and professional services. The core business still includes police and firefighters, as well as healthcare workers, students and anyone looking for custom embroidery or logos.Unlike most modern businesses, however, Sam Harris Uniforms has no online ordering capability. Karla Dennhardt calls that detail a reflection of the business' personal standards."We can't meet the needs of our customers well enough if we don't do it the old-school way," she said.Solomon Harris opened his store in 1910, selling general purpose items and merchandise geared for agriculture work."He switched to Sam because back in the early 20th century there was a lot of prejudice for those of the Jewish faith," Todd Dennhardt said. The first owner operated the business with two of his sons and a long-time employee, Reuben Jacobs. When Solomon died, the business was split between the sons and Jacobs. One of the Harris sons, however, quickly sold his share to Jacobs, and the other son died in 1934, Dennhardt said. Jacobs bought the remaining share at that time and owned the store outright for more than five decades. The same decade that saw Jacobs take over as the sole owner was also the first time the store began to sell police and firefighter uniforms. The store also was one of the first AT&T telephone accounts in the city, with a five-digit telephone number of 3-5961.The decades of Jacobs' ownership saw the store switch locations at least one time, with addresses at 201 W. Second St. and 507 S. Adams St.Todd Dennhardt's family owned a uniform supply store in the Quad Cities and approached Jacobs about buying the store in the late 1980s. He wasn't interested."He worked here until the day he died," Todd Dennhardt said. "In this business, you don't 迷你倉etire, you die in it."Jacobs' family sold the store to Todd Dennhardt's family in 1990, and he took over on Sept. 17 of that year after having less than a week to survey the inventory in the store."Inventory was just kind of anywhere and everywhere," he said. "It was not the same kind of purchasing environment as today. ... I found shoes that were 60 years old."The business moved to its current location on Sheridan Road just north of Main Street in 1992.Todd and Karla Dennhardt bought the business from his family on May 31, 2007, and they redesigned the company logo in 2010.The logo is a throwback to days of old and is prominently displayed on the storefront at 1025 N. Sheridan Road. The company's future is decidedly related to the past. Some of the same products that have made up its core business over several decades continue to be made, among them custom emblems."Our store used to do hand-made emblems, so no two emblems were exactly the same," Karla Dennhardt said. The process today is computer automated, but Sam Harris Uniforms can provide the products in runs that number in the thousands or single digits.Customers won't find overalls, riding outfits or bowling shirts any longer, but nurses can find scrubs and District 150 and some private school students can find all the colors of uniform clothing allowed by their school."You see where we were and where we've come from in this country in the different apparel we've stocked over the years," Karla Dennhardt said.Added Todd Dennhardt: "As we've become a more casual nation, the needs for uniforms change. ... We've had to reinvent ourselves."Sam Harris Uniforms supplies uniforms for schools, public safety, health care, culinary and industrial businesses -- an unusual breadth of offerings in the uniform business, Todd Dennhardt said. The products, however, remain so specific in customization that the business has resisted allowing online ordering. Phone and in-person orders may not be the most convenient, but the personal contact helps make sure the orders are done correctly and builds a rapport with customers."The standard that we operate with is a little bit different," Karla Dennhardt said. "Truthfully, everything goes back to the service we provide."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 Journal Star (Peoria, Ill.) LePage apologizes to Republicans for Obama controversy
Source: Portland Press Herald, MaineAug.迷你倉出租 24--Gov. Paul LePage sent his fellow Republicans a statement late Friday afternoon apologizing for the recent controversy over comments he has been accused of making about President Obama. The statement, obtained by the Portland Press Herald, begins with LePage saying, "My fellow Republicans, I write to you to apologize for any difficulty that remarks recently reported in the press may have caused you."He goes on to say, "Let me be clear, I do not believe that President Obama dislikes any racial group."LePage makes no other reference to Obama and race in the statement. He does not deny making the comment, and goes on to blame newspapers for the controversy, saying that they have attacked him and mischaracterized his comments. The comments in question were made during a Maine Republican Party fundraiser on Aug. 12, at the home of John and Lisa Fortier of Belgrade, where, according to several people who attended, LePage claimed that President Obama "hates white people."Two Republican lawmakers confirmed to the Portland Press Herald Monday that they heard the governor make the comment. Both said the governor made the comment during informal remarks to about 60 people. They said LePage talked about how Obama could have been the best president ever if he had highlighted his biracial heritage. LePage said the president hasn't done that because he hates white people. The Press Herald was the first to report the remark. Both lawmakers asked that their names be withheld because they are concerned about political retribution. Others who attended the event told the Press Herald that they didn't hear the remark. In Friday's statement to Republicans, LePage wrote English wasn't his first language -- French was -- and he's not a polished speaker. He also wrote, "Newspapers owned by politically motivated and powerful elitists relentlessly attack my every word and often mischaracterize my comments. They highlight negativity and partisan finger-pointing while putting important issues in the background--or they fail to report them at all."The "politically motivated and powerful elitists" in the statement is a reference to U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree and her husband, financier S. Donald Sussman, a contributor to Democratic and charitable causes. 迷你倉ussman is the majority share owner of MaineToday Media, which owns the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, the Kennebec Journal in Augusta, the Morning Sentinel in Waterville and other media outlets in Maine. His statement comes after he denied making the comments earlier this week.Speaking briefly to reporters at the State House on Wednesday, he said, "No, I never said that, and you guys are all about gossip," according to video from WCSH-TV in Portland. The controversy made headlines across the country during a relatively slow national news week, with Congress on its August holiday. LePage was the subject of a profile in The New York Times, and his comments were discussed repeatedly on national news programs on networks such as CNN and MSNBC.LePage, 64, won a three-way race in 2010 with strong Tea Party support. In The New York Times story, LePage is described as making "startlingly blunt assertions" that "could add up to a major vulnerability" for the governor, who is facing re-election next year. Some of those comments include:--In September 2010, before he was elected, he told a group of fishermen at a forum: "As your governor, you're going to be seeing a lot of me on the front page, saying 'Governor LePage tells Obama to go to hell.'"--In January 2011, shortly after he was sworn in, he declined an invitation to an event hosted by the NAACP in Portland. When asked what he would tell the group if it questioned his decision, LePage replied, "Tell them to kiss my butt."--In July last year, he compared the Internal Revenue Service to the Gestapo, the Nazi police.--In June of this year, he said Maine Assistant Senate Majority Leader Troy Jackson would be "the first one to give it to the people without providing Vaseline."In response to LePage's "Vaseline" comments, GOP state Sen. Roger Katz, R-Augusta, wrote a scathing op-ed that appeared in the Portland Press Herald and Bangor Daily News in late June."As a lifelong, proud Republican who was overjoyed to see a Republican elected back into the Blaine House three years ago, I have one thing to say. I am embarrassed," Katz wrote.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 Portland Press Herald (Portland, Maine) Visit the Portland Press Herald (Portland, Maine) at .pressherald.com Distributed by MCT Information Services儲存倉
