Four veteran drivers with more than 220 years behind the wheel talk about motor insurance, road behaviour and driving passionOne often hears that Singapore's population is ageing, with the cohort of baby boomers now forming an ever-growing silver-haired brigade.mini storageThe changing profile of drivers here is stark evidence of this trend. For instance, the number of driving licence holders older than 65 has doubled from 118,237 in 2006 to 234,371 at the end of September this year, according to Traffic Police statistics.If the trend continues, this group could hit 500,000 by 2020.The 106-year-old Automobile Association of Singapore has 6,300 members who are 70 or older.One of them is retired accountant Tan See Peng, 84, who has been driving since 1955.In his younger days, he used to make regular road trips across the Causeway, often to visit his hometown, Batu Pahat.These days, he is the family chauffeur. "My grandchildren will say, 'Take me here and there'," he says."The drives are not very long, except when I send my grandson back to his NS camp every Monday morning. It's 28km each way."Maybe I should bill the Treasury," he chuckles.He says he still enjoys driving but avoids the expressways "because people will overtake you on the right and left".In his 58 years of driving, he says he has never had a serious accident. Yet he finds it increasingly difficult to get insurance coverage."The Government must pass a law... to make basic coverage available to everyone," he says.Another old-timer says the same. Mr Joseph Saverias, 75, has been taking part in motorsports and driving events since clinching his licence on the first attempt in 1955.Even now, he takes his Ferrari 348 onto the race track in Sepang, near Kuala Lumpur."At my age, I can still drive my Ferrari and join younger drivers on long drives," he says. "Yet the insurance companies think I am old and could be dangerous on the road."He says he enjoys driving, although in Singapore, drivers are "not generous". "In Europe and Australia, drivers are patient, allow you to cut in."They don't race you or give you dirty looks as you filter in even though you have put on your indicator."Retiree Tan Pof-Eng, 75, concurs. He got his driving licence in England in 1955 when he was studying there.Since then, he has lived and driven in many countries, including the Middle East, Europe, Britain, Australia and Papua New Guinea, as he worked on construction projects in t迷你倉ese places."The most pleasant place to drive would be Australia," he recalls. "It's very orderly driving, and you get that sense of freedom of an open country."Singapore is the worst place to drive - people don't keep to their lane, change lane erratically, signal right but turn left."He says he has never had an accident or made any insurance claim.These days, he alternates between a Mercedes- Benz 280S and a Volkswagen Golf "to go to the hawker centre, to shops"."I don't drive as much as I used to," he adds.Quite unlike businessman Larry Lim, who still takes part in vintage and off-road driving events today. His first was in April 1969, when he and his wife, Daisy, 70, took part in the United Nations' first Asian Highway Rally from Vientiane in Laos to Singapore."That was when we were bitten by the driving bug," says the strapping 72-year-old who got his driving and riding licences in 1963.Since then, they have done long road trips in several countries, including Africa, China, Saudi Arabia, Russia and Australia, and won many rallies.The most memorable ones were a 2006 drive from Dalian in China to the Russian border, enroute to Inner Mongolia, and from there, all the way back to Singapore; and a 2011 odyssey from Cape Town to Cairo.He relies on Toyota and Mitsubishi SUVs, but has done several trips with his 1970 Rolls-Royce Corniche convertible, which he has driven over long unpaved stretches."These cars were very advanced in their day and very robust," he says of the Rolls-Royce.His fascination with Rolls-Royce - and long-time sister brand Bentley - dates back to "when I was 12"."At that time, you could get a house in London for ¢G3,500. But a Bentley R-Type Continental was ¢G7,500," he recalls. "I dreamed that one day I could afford one."Today, his collection includes a 1926 Rolls-Royce Twenty and a 1939 Bentley 4-1/4 Litre - both of which are kept in the living room of his house off Bartley Road.Outside, there is the Corniche and that 1953 R-Type Continental - one of only 250 units made. "It was the heaviest and fastest car back then," Mr Lim says.The silver coupe still looks fast, with covered rear wheels, muscular haunches and a wind-cheating teardrop shape.In his second home in Sydney, he has a relatively modern Bentley Azure convertible.In fact, all his cars look like they have many more years in them. "The first thing I saw was a hero down and blood, and one of his family members comforting him.""I've seen it in war," Painter said, noting that Nov. 15, 2012, was full of fear and terror, a chaos he remembers from his time serving as a Marine in Vietnam.Four men died as a result of the train accident that struck about 4:35 p.m. Nov. 15, 2012, at South Garfield Street and West Industrial Avenue, with more than a dozen injured. The Hunt for Heroes parade float was crossing over the train intersection when a Union Pacific train collided with the float.Hunt for Heroes is a charity event hosted by Show of Support in honor of wounded warriors. The people on the float were the wounded warriors with their wives, who were finishing a parade route before going on the annual hunting trip.That day wasn't just like any other day before the accident, as Painter was at the Midland Horseshoe arena with his family, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the heroes from the parade.Painter and his department was part of honoring the heroes, with officers in the department and officers on horses awaiting the arrival of the heroes. The Midland Fire Department was also there, with fire engines and ambulances.Something seemed wrong when some of the fire engines and ambulances started pulling away, Painter said. They wouldn't do that except for something big.That's when he was told by one of his officers about the radio call that came in just seconds before: A train crashed into the float carrying heroes.Mayor Wes Perry was in a meeting at Midland ISD with State Sen. Kel Seliger and some business leaders when he received a message from someone about the accident."I jumped up and left," Perry said. "When I saw it, I thought this can't be happening. It must be a mistake."Perry said when he arrived on the scene, he knew there was nothing he could do but provide the emotional response to the media as a resident of the city of Midland.Instead of speculating, or focusing on the facts of what happened, Perry said he knew immediately his role was to be a person, and even removed himself from much of the process to avoid getting in the way.CBS 7 anchor Jay Hendricks said he was in the newsroom when their team first heard of the crash."The scanner went off. Something about a call with a crash," Hendricks said, remembering that they thought they heard someone say parade. "Our immediate thought was it was the float with the wounded soldiers."Hendricks and one of the videographers at CBS 7 immediately drove out to the scene, where they were mostly blocked from seeing anything but the train itself.On the other side of the train, Painter was working feverishly to help those who were injured. But he wasn't the only one."The heroes, even the ones who were injured, were providing first aid to people at the scene," Painter said. "They were doing what they were trained to do."Despite the men on that float being home from war, Painter said from experience that it takes a while to switch from the mentality of being at war to the mentality of being safe at home.He said those men were most likely still in the mindset of being at war."You tune your senses to the act of war," Painter said. "You can't just flip a switch and turn it off."The heroes at the scene became a team when the train struck, he said, and formed a bond with each other as well as w迷你倉th the first responders who arrived on scene.After the initial shock of seeing the scene, Painter said he had to disassociate himself in order to do what needed to be done -- help the injured, remove the dead, and ultimately investigate the scene.But, of course, Painter said the injured were the top priority.Dr. Sudip Bose, who provided medical support for the event, said he was only a few blocks away when he was told about the accident."The first thing I noticed when I got to the scene, obviously it's a horrific, chaotic scene," Bose said. "But even in this experience, even in moments like this, you just see incredible, incredible acts of human courage and the human spirit."Bose said bystanders, parade members and the veterans all helped out with the wounded, even as some were wounded themselves."I remember people holding bleeding points, I remember people trying to tie tourniquets," Bose said. "I remember things like that because in the end, one provider can only do so much."Perry said he went home to be with his family for about an hour after a short time at the scene, praying with them after not knowing what to do in the middle of the chaos."I didn't feel like (the scene) was my place," Perry said. "I didn't want it to feel like a political thing."Perry said the accident wasn't about him, and wasn't even about Midland. It was about the veterans who died and the people who were injured during the accident.Hendricks said during his interviews he could tell who saw the accident and who was relaying secondhand information.Those who were animated with hand gestures and somewhat in shock clearly saw what happened, he said.But even as someone reporting, Hendricks said he had a personal interest in the accident, as well. Earlier that day, Hendricks was at the luncheon with Perry and the veterans, where Perry gave them keys to the city and told them, "you're going to hear the word hero all weekend."Hendricks said he shook hands with Sgt. Maj. Lawrence Boivin that day."I remember his face vividly," Hendricks said.And through his interviews, Hendricks said nobody could believe it happened in Midland, and that downtown was a quiet place that day and night."It was almost like the collective breath of Midland had gone away," Hendricks said. "It was just very quiet. Very somber."Even in his role as a law enforcement officer, Painter said he felt the same way. He was in shock and saddened.When something like that wreck happens in your backyard, Painter said, it's devastating."I prayed many times that night. For strength not just for me, but for the people out there," Painter said, as he had to wipe tears from his eyes. "I drive past that location at Garfield and Industrial every single day. And there's not a time I don't look, reflect and say a prayer."It wasn't until the next morning that the gravity of the situation hit Perry, he said.Despite having all the emotions and feelings of sadness that residents of Midland felt that day, he wasn't able to fully grasp the subject until he saw Hunt for Heroes organizer Terry Johnson at a vigil the next morning. The two hugged for a long time."I think I was on autopilot and just trying to be strong," Perry said. "It kinda hit me that this ... this was real. 陸客團回籠了！大陸新旅遊法十一上路，迷你倉一度讓遊日月潭陸客銳減，現已逐漸回溫，自由行陸客也增加了，旅遊業者說，新旅遊法讓低價團消失，對台灣觀光業長期來說是利多。日月潭國家風景區管理處統計新旅遊法上路後，上月到日月潭旅遊的陸客團9萬8千6百餘人，比去年同期14萬7千餘人，減少三成三；本月迄昨陸客團5萬4千人，比去年同期7萬7千人減少約三成。日月潭碼頭旅遊休閒事業公司負責人劉楊淑堯說，雖然陸客人數尚未恢復到新法實施前每月平均14至16萬人次的水準，但比新法剛公布時陸客團銳減九成，已成長許多，加上自由行陸客持續增加中，明顯回溫。劉楊mini storage堯表示，原來每天接50個旅遊團搭遊艇，新法上路之初，一度跌至一天只有5團，最慘時甚至一天才出船一趟，如今遊艇生意恢復到八成。日月潭湛岸船隊經理黃勝煇也說，他的船隊搭載陸客團加上自由行陸客，回溫至八成，比起十月初低潮期好很多。為因應愈來愈多的自由行陸客，埔里鎮寶飯店調整營業方向，陸客團降低至三成，加強網路行銷，吸引自由行陸客。埔里金都餐廳董事長林素貞說，自由行陸客雖沒有團客多，但消費力高，彌補陸客團減少的損失，長遠來說助益大。旅遊業者說，高價陸客團來台，因沒有購物行程，受影響較大的是藝品店，飯店周遭的茶葉行與商家，生意意外成長。迷你倉

【本報訊】捲入逃稅事件，迷你倉並被指將不良經營手法帶到台灣的港商，分別是王永堅家族及鍾偉棠。在香港，他們都是旅遊業界名氣「響噹噹」的人物，紅磡、土瓜灣一帶的珠寶、手信及朱古力店，在他們經營下，成為近年內地遊客必定要幫襯的指定購物點。專做自由行生意據記者調查，王永堅擁有十多間公司，包括世通旅遊、名廚巧克力、東亞旅運等，主要做旅遊及購物的一條龍服務。今年農曆新年的內地客「�旅巴」事件，令王永堅成為傳媒追訪對象，廣為人知，最終世通旅遊被旅行代理商註冊處「釘牌」。其家族擁有超過40間公司，當中大多是做大陸遊客生意，分佈在土瓜灣多條街，被人稱為「�客街」。王永儲存妻子、人稱「Mona姐」的雷素娥負責管理香港和台灣業務、姨仔雷素玉及其丈夫擁多間珠寶及免稅店，全部設於土瓜灣；而女兒王淑雯近年亦接棒經營生意。最近雷素娥任董事的一間珠寶店涉拖欠逾百萬元佣金，追債者在深圳高舉「無良奸商欠債還錢」標語追數。至於鍾偉棠則擁有十多間珠寶、首飾、朱古力及投資公司，據知，鍾偉棠靠珠寶生意起家，2009年斥資3,000萬在民樂街凱旋工商中心購入三個地舖開珠寶店，又在鶴園街租地舖開大型珠寶店。2010年他用1,000萬在榮光街榮輝大廈掃4間舖位，在王永堅的Chocolate Kitchen店舖對面開朱古力媽媽，幾乎全部做遊客生意。mini storage

石英元件廠晶技（3042）昨（15）日公布10月自結損益，儲存晶技10月營收為7.98億元，月減6.6%；單月稅前盈餘8,298萬元，月減21.4%，年減33.6%，單月每股稅前盈餘0.27元。累計前十月稅前盈餘8.74億元，年減18.0%，每股稅前盈餘為2.82元。晶技昨（15）日股價下跌0.35元、收30.95元。迷你倉技今年上半年營運較為平淡，下半年因蘋果、三星等大廠新機上市帶動下，營收已逐漸回溫，9月營收創下今年新高，但10月因智慧型手機需求不如預期，營收下滑。外資瑞信證券近期將晶技評等由「優於大盤」下調為「中立」，目標價從原先的48.5元下調至36元，主因是認為中國大陸低階智慧型手機客戶要求晶技提供較便宜的產品，將影響獲利能力。self storage
