Source: Albuquerque Journal, N.儲存M.Dec. 25--Yes, the New Mexico Lobos looked pretty good in wins over Marquette and Grand Canyon University while using a starting lineup that included freshman Cullen Neal and junior wing player Deshawn Delaney. No, don't get used to it.Barring an unforeseen setback with the right wrist injury Hugh Greenwood suffered in a Dec. 4 win over New Mexico State in Las Cruces, the junior point guard from Australia will return to the starting lineup Jan. 4 when the Lobos start Mountain West Conference play in the Pit against Colorado State."He was day to day until Christmas," UNM head coach Craig Neal said Monday night, almost mockingly using the same cadence he used about 100 times over the past week when asked about Greenwood's status. "Then after Christmas he is live."Neal also made reference in another answer about how happy he is to have a starter returning in time for league play. After Greenwood injured the wrist Dec. 4, he played 36 and 32 minutes, respectively, in a Dec. 7 win over Cincinnati and a Dec. 14 loss to Kansas in Kansas City, Mo. In the latter, it was painfully obvious for the Lobos he was no longer a threat to shoot. Jayhawks defenders frequently left him open and double-teamed other Lobo players. After that game, Cullen Neal was inserted into the starting lineup for the Dec. 17 loss to NMSU, ending Greenwood's streak of 51 consecutive starts. After that NMSU loss, when Greenwood's ball-handling, leadership and stabilizing presence were sorely missed, Cullen Neal had back-to-back breakout games in the Marquette and GCU wins, averaging 21.0 points, 4.5 assists, 2.5 turnovers, hitting nine 3-pointers and shooting 59.1 percent from the floor. So is it possible Cullen Neal remains in the starting lineup in place of Deshawn Delaney, who has averaged 8.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists. 1.5 blocks and 1.5 steals since he was inserted into the starting lineup for the Marquette and GCU wins?"I'll just let you think about it over Christmas," coach Neal told the Journal on Monday night. The good money is on Delaney, a better one-on-one defender and rebounder than Cullen Neal, remaining on the wing, while the freshman serves as the first player off the bench who can be counted on to be a scoring threat and possible energy boost when he checks in about five minutes into the game. Cullen Neal also is considered one of the team's three primary ball-handlers along with Kendall Williams and Greenwood, so using him off the bench in case of injury or foul trouble is likely.SPREADING IT AROUND: In UNM's past two wins, with a starting lineup of Williams, Neal, Delaney, Alex Kirk and Cameron Bairstow, all five starters scored by the first media timeout (the officials' timeout called at the first dead b迷你倉ll past the 16-minute mark). That didn't happen once in the Lobos' first 10 games.'PANCAKE' PLAYING WELL: In back-to-back games off the bench after starting the team's first 10 games, Cleveland "Pancake" Thomas has received plenty of praise from his head coach. In the past two games Thomas averaged 4.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 16 minutes. In the three games prior (vs. Cincinnati, at Kansas and vs. NMSU), Thomas averaged 1.3 points, 2.3 rebounds and was 0-for-9 from the field.HOLIDAY BREAK: The Lobo players were released from all team duties and responsibilities after Monday night's win and will return to campus Friday night in time for a Saturday morning workout. Many of the out-of-state players flew home Tuesday.Time away from the team for family and friends is well deserved, Craig Neal said, but may have also contributed to the poor second half of play against Grand Canyon University, especially in the final 10 minutes when the Antelopes cut a 27-point lead to 12 by the final buzzer .(UNM won 80-68.)"I didn't want to think about it, but I think we've lost three of four right before Christmas, and I think the holidays and when they're leaving and when they're packing came into effect," coach Neal said.UNM, despite being favored in each, lost its final game before Christmas in 2009 at Oral Roberts after a 12-0 start, in 2010 to Northern Iowa after a 10-1 start and a year ago to South Dakota State after a 12-0 start."Finishing Season 1 (the nonconference schedule) 9-3 is very good with our schedule. But we've got some growing to do and this will give our guys a chance to clear their mind and get away from the game a little bit," the coach said.ATTENDANCE: With Monday night's announced attendance of 15,322 in the Pit, UNM's average home attendance in six games passed the 15,000 mark (at 15,016). UNM leads the Mountain West in home attendance this season with UNLV (12,609) in second and San Diego State (12,414) third. No other league team is averaging better than 10,000.MOVING UP: Williams continues moving up the all-time record lists at UNM. His 15 points, eight assists, three steals, seven free throws and two 3-pointers Monday night vs. GCU moved him up on these career lists:1,492 points, 11th all-time behind Mel Daniels (next at 1,537);511 assists, sixth all-time behind Pete Gibson (next at 560);153 steals, tied for ninth with Mark Walters;473 free throws made, fifth all-time behind Ruben Douglas (next at 488); and163 3-pointers made, 11th all-time behind Marlow White (next at 171).
