Source: Detroit Free PressOct.self storage 25--The online auction for Detroit's iconic Packard plant ended late this afternoon with a final bid of just over $6 million.David Szymanski, chief deputy treasurer for Wayne County, said an auction participant registered as Jill Van Horn of Ennis, Texas, placed the winning bid of $6,038,000. He said county officials had yet to speak Van Horn or confirm whether she has the money.The identity of the second-place bidder was not disclosed. Szymanski said the third-place bidder dropped out of the auction at $2 million.The auction was originally scheduled to end at 4:45 p.m., but went into overtime as bidding rocketed from $1 million to over $5 million in the final five minutes.The auction extended in five minute increments as participants upped their bids by sums of $1,000 to $4,000.It finally ended at about 5:20 p.m. after more than 110 bids. The Packard plant was one of the final three parcels in this second-round of the Wayne County treasurer's tax foreclosure.And bidding wasn't the only thing that was on fire Friday -- like most days, the plant its迷你倉lf was, too.If confirmed the winner, Van Horn will get all 35 acres of a decayed auto plant that has become an internationally recognized symbol for Detroit's decline.The auction opened at $21,000 on Oct. 8 after no one wanted to pay the minimum $1 million for the plant in the September first round.The new owner won't have to pay the property's $1 million in back taxes, although she would face an annual tax bill that tops $100,000. But that tax assessment can be appealed.She would also pick up the liability of a rotting industrial hulk that regularly catches fire and is overrun by scrappers and curiosity-seekers.Chicago-area developer Williams Hults had a tentative deal last month to purchase the 110-year-old structure, but failed to come up with the then-price tag of $1 million cash.Opened in 1903, the Albert Kahn-designed Packard factory stopped making vehicles in the mid-1950s.
