Source: The Pueblo Chieftain, Colo.mini storageOct. 26--An area consortium, including Pueblo Community College, will use a recently awarded $900,000 grant to train individuals to join the health information technology workforce.Other partners in the three-year grant from the Department of Health and Human Services are the nonprofit Data Services for Healthcare, Southeast Colorado Area Health Education Center and the Colorado Rural Health Center. DaSH will administer the grant.The partners have identified 12 hospitals in 16 counties that will benefit from the grant, according to DaSH Executive Director Bill Bolt."The grant will allow DaSH and its partners to provide scholarships and placement services to students wishing to obtain a degree in IT or a certificate in HIT from PCC, and are willing to work in a rural, frontier or urban under-served community." Bolt said.The grant partners will work together to recruit, train and place HIT personnel in rural institutions participating in the DaSH network. Colorado Rural Health Center, the State Office of Rural Health and a DaSH partner will assist in promoting 迷你倉he program to rural communities.Initial classes will be offered during the spring 2014 semester. PCC will develop two HIT certificate programs that will be offered online -- HIT management and support, and HIT network security/ technical support. PCC also will augment the HIT medical coding certificate already available there.All students will start by taking prerequisite HIT courses before choosing one of the three certificate program options. The training will conclude with an internship at a rural hospital, which is intended to pave the hiring of these students once they complete their studies.
