Bill Flores, R-Bryan, updated constituents on Thursday on the third day of the partial government shutdown.Flores, who has given frequent updates from Washington, held a teleconference with district reporters on Thursday, a few minutes after news broke that shots had been fired near the capitol. Undeterred, Flores reiterated the Republican strategy for the fiscal fight. He again predicted that the partial shutdown could drag on for weeks."Looking forward, I can't tell you the direction we're going to go, but I can tell you that two weeks from today we have been told by the Treasury Department that we are going to hit the federal debt limit, and so based on what I see at this point I think we will wind up merging this set of discussions into a broader discussion about how we deal with the debt ceiling," Flores said.The partial shutdown began Monday at midnight, and lawmakers indicated Wednesday that the impasse could drag on into the upcoming dialogue on the debt limit in two weeks. House Republicans, along with Flores, passed a budget that strips funding from the Affordable Care Act and have since proposed piecemeal funding for the government, which doesn't include the health care law.Democrats in the Senate, along with President Barack mini storagebama, are at odds with the GOP-written House budget, and both sides have essentially refused to barter over what historically has been a routine approval of the operation of public services.Flores maintains that his Republican-heavy constituency backs the GOP's stance."We have seen changes in the way our constituents have responded. On Monday, before the shutdown, they were highly in favor of holding the line to try to stop Obamacare, including shutting the government down if that's what it took. I keep trying to walk people back from the cliff on shutting the government down and I keep telling them my goal is to fully fund the government and do what we can to minimize the adverse impact of Obamacare."On Tuesday, the calls were about 50/50 ... Yesterday and today, the calls have shifted somewhat, that 60 to 70 percent are in favor of us continuing with our strategy."Flores said he didn't know exactly how many of the 800,000 furloughed federal workers were within his district."The part of the government that tracks that ... is unfortunately furloughed," Flores said.
