Source: Albuquerque Journal, N.迷你倉沙田M.Aug. 01--The South, as is often the case, won this year's Class 4A/5A North-South All-Star football game. The most valuable player in the game lives in Dona Ana County. That same player comes from District 3-5A.But he doesn't play for either Mayfield or Las Cruces."The stuff he was doing," Las Cruces High's Kamryn Dixon said, "we saw him do that at Gadsden. He's the most elusive player I've been around."Yes, the MVP of Wednesday night's North-South game at Milne Stadium was a Gadsden Panther. How many times has that ever been the case in one of these summer showcases? How many times does Gadsden even get a player into one of these games?Indeed, the smallest of all the South All-Stars, Gadsden quarterback Aaron Gomez, shined brighter than all of his peers. He ran for two touchdowns and threw for a third as the South overcame a 13-0 deficit to beat the North 34-20."It meant a lot to me to play good in this game," the 5-foot-7, 155-pound Gomez said, "because not a lot of people respect Gadsden. And I wanted to show them that we do have something down there."He had a 21-yard TD run in the second quarter and also threw an 18-yard touchdown strike to Las Cruces' Michael Holguin just before halftime. That, along with the first of Gomez's two-point conversion runs, tied the score 20-20 at intermission. He added a 9-yard TD run in the fourth quarter that sealed things for the South. It is possible, Gomez admitted later, that he played the last game of his career. If this was it, what a way to go out."It was amazing," Gomez said. "It was one of the best experiences of my life. I'm gonna remember this forever."Numerous South teammates stopped by to pat him on the shoulder pads, each saying the same thing:MVP."Give him some athletes and he's a baller," said Las Cruces High QB Jon Joy, who won a state title with the Bulldawgs in Decembe迷你倉價錢. "He's a very good football player."Gomez threw for 102 yards and rushed for 64 yards."Just watching him run," North coach Chad Wallin of Volcano Vista said, "I'm like, 'Is that the Mayfield quarterback? The Las Cruces quarterback?' It was that kind of style."The North was out quickly, as Sandia's Craig Coffman threw a 9-yard TD pass to Rio Rancho's Austin Patterson, and Cleveland's Steven Steele caught a 52-yard strike from Aztec's Adam Lucero. It was 13-0 less than two minutes into the second quarter.Gomez's first scoring run, and Joy's 25-yard toss to Dixon, pulled the South to within 13-12. The North had much to do with this turn of events. A terrible punt snap led to the first South score, and a fumble moments later led directly to the second TD.Lucero added a 23-yard TD pass to Moriarty's Davilay Wells with 1:05 left before halftime for a 20-12 lead. The South answered with astonishing speed. Gomez led the South to the end zone in just four plays; the 65-yard drive lasted 30 seconds. The North labored after halftime, although it might be just as accurate to say that the South flourished. In the third quarter, the South ran 20 plays to three for the North.Mayfield's Marcus Inglemon scored on a 5-yard run midway through the quarter, capping a 13-play, 68-yard drive that consumed 7 minutes and 5 seconds. It was 26-20.After a three-and-out by the North, Gomez engineered a nine-play, 63-yard scoring drive.NOTES: Steele also had an interception for the North. ... The coaches, Wallin and Goddard's Sam Jernigan, squared off at Milne once before, in the 2009 Class 4A semifinals, a game won by the Rockets. ... The South out-gained the North 162 yards to 20 in the second half.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Albuquerque Journal (Albuquerque, N.M.)
